CAF U-23 AFCON qualifers: Ghana complete double over Mozambique to progress to final round
The Black Meteors of Ghana did the double over Mozambique at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday as they won by 2-0 in the second leg of their CAF U-23 AFCON qualifers tie.
The Meteors needed just a draw to progress after winning 2-1 away last week Saturday. Hafiz got the first chance at goal for Ghana but his effort was saved by the Mozambique goalkeeper in the opening minutes of the game.
Sylvester Simba broke the deadlock with an amazing drive to give the Black Meteors the lead at the closing stages of the first half.
After recess, the Meteors proved too resilient and were almost rewarded with their second for the day but captain Afriyie Barnie failed to score for as he headed over an empty post.
Sylvester Simba won another penalty for Ghana after he was brought down in the box by the Mozambican defender and it was captain Daniel Afriyie Barnie who converted nicely from the spot to give Ghana a two-goal lead in the 54th minute, recording his third for the Meteors over the two legs.
The Mozambicans scored late in the game but the goal was ruled out for an offside as Ghana held on to progress to the final round of the qualifiers after a 4-1 aggregate score.
