CAF Women’s Champions League: AS FAR crowned champions, set to pocket $400,000 as prize money
Morrocan side AS FAR put up a gallant display to beat defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0 in Rabat, Morocco to win the second edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League title for the first time.
Goals from Fatima Tagnout, Aziza Rabbah and Ibtisssam Jraidi propelled the Moroccan ladies to complete the host and win.
The victory means the Moroccan based side will take home a whooping 400,000 USD as champions whiles Mamelodi Sundowns take home 250,000 USD as runner ups.
Coming into the game full of confidence, after winning the maiden edition, Sundowns were on the back foot from the very beginning as ASFAR’s rapid passing and the possession-based game proved too much for Sundowns.
Fatima broke the deadlock in the 15th minute from the spot before the other three goals in the second half.
Sundowns after receiving two red cards struggled to deal with ASFAR’s breathtaking press and they went 2-0 behind in the 52nd minute courtesy of Aziza before the brace from Ibtissam in the 85th minute and the 89th minute.
It was the second meeting between the two teams at that level as they clashed in their final group game in 2021at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo which ended 0-0.
The teams ended the 2021 CAF WCL inside the top three, where Sundowns were the eventual champions while AS FAR ended in third.
Bayelsa Queens of Nigeria will also receive $150,000 as they salvaged something from a disappointing CAF Women’s Champions League by clinching the bronze medal with a 1-0 win over Simba Queens in the third place match at Stade Moulay Hassan on Saturday.
