Calls for Energy Minister’s resignation intensify amidst worsening energy crisis
The Institute of Energy Security (IES) has escalated its demands for the immediate removal of Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, citing the deteriorating energy situation in the country as the primary reason for their stance.
In a statement issued by the IES, they emphasized the urgent need for intervention to address the ongoing energy crisis, further advocating for the minister’s dismissal due to perceived inaction and detachment from the ground reality of the energy sector.
Nana Amoasi VII, the Executive Director of IES, articulated his disappointment and frustration with the minister’s handling of the energy crisis in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV. He questioned the relevance of the minister’s presence in the critical energy sector, given the current challenges faced by consumers.
“Where we have gotten to, there is no circuit and so what is the use of the minister in that space? He must be relieved, probably to concentrate on any other agenda he is bidding for,” Nana Amoasi VII asserted, adding, “It is becoming too much. Is it not insulting with the statement that he made? Total disrespect to consumers. Are we asking for too much?”
Nana Amoasi VII, who identifies as a prepaid consumer, highlighted the contract nature of the prepaid meter system and criticized the minister for failing to provide clarity on the power supply situation.
“If I am not going to get the power, then just out of respect, at least tell me when I can have the power. But don’t look into my face and say, I should go and produce my own timetable,” he passionately expressed.
The growing discontent and calls for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s resignation reflect the increasing frustration among consumers and industry stakeholders over the worsening energy crisis. The government’s response to these demands and its ability to effectively address the energy challenges will be closely watched in the coming days.
