Cement Price Increase of GHS 6 per Bag False, Says Ghana Standards Authority

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has refuted claims circulating on social media that suggest cement prices will rise by GHS 6 per bag from today, January 19, 2026, describing the notice as false and unauthorized, thereby easing concerns across the construction sector.

In a statement, the Authority said it has not issued any directive approving an increase in cement prices, stressing that the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee—of which the GSA is a member—has not endorsed any upward adjustment.

“The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) wishes to inform the public that the notice circulating about a GHS 6 price increment of cement on Monday, 19th January, 2026, is false. The Cement Manufacturing Development Committee, which includes GSA, has not issued any such directive,” the statement said.

The Authority further urged the public to disregard the notice and rely on official communication channels for accurate information.

The clarification comes at a sensitive time for the construction industry, where cement pricing has a direct impact on project costs, delivery schedules, and the overall competitiveness of the sector.

The false notice had created uncertainty among contractors, real estate developers and suppliers, many of whom are still adjusting to elevated input costs experienced over the past year.

Cement prices remain a key concern for industry players as firms prepare budgets for ongoing and planned projects in 2026, amid moderating inflation and relative stability in the cedi.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, is expected to hold discussions with cement manufacturers later today, in what is anticipated to be a renewed government effort to push for price reductions in line with improving macroeconomic conditions, while also addressing operational and structural challenges within the cement industry.
