- Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk Cleared to Return Following Resolution of Doping Case
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared to resume his professional career with immediate effect after reaching an agreement with the Football Association (FA) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that brings an end to one of the most controversial doping cases in recent English football.
The 25-year-old Ukraine international has been inactive since November 2024 after testing positive for a low concentration of meldonium, a substance prohibited under anti-doping regulations at the time. Although he initially received a four-year suspension, Mudryk appealed the sanction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The appeal process coincided with significant changes to WADA’s scientific reporting standards for meldonium. Under the revised procedures, the concentration detected in Mudryk’s original sample would no longer have triggered a positive test or resulted in anti-doping charges.
In a statement, the FA explained that advances in scientific testing had fundamentally altered how similar cases are now handled.
According to the governing body, if Mudryk’s sample had been collected and analysed under today’s technical standards, the result would not have been reported as a positive test and no anti-doping rule violation would have occurred.
The FA confirmed that, with WADA’s agreement, both parties had resolved the appeal proceedings.
“As part of the agreement, Mr Mudryk accepted that he had committed the Anti-Doping Rule Violations charged and agreed to a period of ineligibility equal to the time already served,” the FA said.
The decision means the Chelsea forward has now completed his suspension and is immediately eligible to return to competitive football.
Chelsea expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing the scientific developments surrounding the case as an important factor in reaching a fair resolution.
The club said it looked forward to supporting the Ukrainian international as he resumes his career after almost two years away from competitive football.
“We welcome the acknowledgement that advances in the applicable scientific reporting standards for more reliable testing mean that, had Misha’s sample been analysed under today’s technical requirements, it would not have been reported as a positive test and no anti-doping rule violation would have resulted,” Chelsea said in a statement.
“That is an important part of the context surrounding the agreed resolution and allows everyone involved to move forward.”
The Blues also confirmed they would assist the player with his reintegration into the first-team squad.
Mudryk admitted the suspension had been the most difficult chapter of his professional life.
The winger, who consistently maintained that the positive test resulted from contamination while on international duty with Ukraine, thanked everyone who stood by him throughout the lengthy legal process.
He described the nearly two-year absence from football as the toughest period of his career and said he was grateful for the opportunity to return to the game he loves.
Chelsea signed Mudryk from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth up to £88 million.
Before his suspension, he made 73 appearances for the Blues, scoring nine goals while establishing himself as one of the club’s brightest attacking talents.
Following his provisional suspension in December 2024, Mudryk was barred from training with Chelsea at Cobham and instead maintained his fitness through personal training sessions away from the club. During his time out of the game, he was also seen volunteering in a London charity shop.
The immediate challenge for Chelsea will be determining how best to reintegrate Mudryk into competitive football after nearly two years on the sidelines.
Having missed almost two full seasons, the winger will require time to rebuild match sharpness and regain peak physical condition.
Chelsea could choose to gradually reintroduce him into the first-team squad or consider a loan move to ensure he receives regular playing time before competing for a place under the club’s new coaching setup.
