The Black Stars of Ghana stand on the brink of a defining moment at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they prepare to face England in a high-stakes Group L encounter at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on Tuesday night.

After opening their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama, Ghana now have the opportunity to take a giant step toward the knockout stages and potentially secure qualification with a game to spare. Standing in their way, however, is one of football’s traditional giants—England.

Despite entering the tournament ranked 74th in the world, Ghana have already demonstrated the resilience, discipline and fighting spirit that have become hallmarks of the Black Stars. Carlos Queiroz’s side stunned Panama with a dramatic late winner from 20-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi, ending a difficult run of form and reigniting hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since 2010.

Now, an even bigger challenge awaits. England arrived in the United States among the favourites to lift the trophy and underlined their credentials with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia. Goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford helped the Three Lions claim all three points, although defensive vulnerabilities were exposed on several occasions.

For Ghana, those weaknesses offer encouragement. Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has embraced the underdog tag and believes his team is fully capable of matching England’s star-studded squad.

“We know how England play. They have excellent players, they have the experience of their Premier League. They have intensity, but we know how we can control this,” Queiroz said ahead of the match.

The Portuguese tactician then delivered a rallying cry that has quickly captured the imagination of Ghanaian supporters. “They have three lions, but we have 33 million lions.”

Queiroz insists matches against football superpowers require no additional motivation. “When you’re about to play against England, France or Germany, you don’t need to say anything to the players. Everybody is fully motivated and wants to perform.”

His confidence reflects the growing belief within the Ghana camp that the Black Stars can upset the odds and write another memorable chapter in their World Cup history.

One of Ghana’s biggest advantages heading into the contest is the expected return of experienced midfielder Thomas Partey.

The former Arsenal player missed the victory over Panama after visa complications prevented him from entering Canada, but he is now available and expected to slot straight into Queiroz’s starting lineup.

Partey’s return will provide leadership, composure and defensive stability in midfield, allowing Ghana to better cope with England’s creative threats.

The Black Stars have also received positive news regarding goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who has recovered from the groin injury that forced him off against Panama. However, Benjamin Asare remains on standby after an impressive display in Toronto.

Caleb Yirenkyi, the hero against Panama, is expected to retain his place after scoring one of the most important goals of Ghana’s recent World Cup history.

While Ghana seek another upset, England know victory would virtually guarantee top spot in Group L and secure their place in the knockout rounds.

Manager Thomas Tuchel praised his team’s attacking performance against Croatia but acknowledged that improvements are required defensively. “I predict a different game than Croatia because of Ghana’s approach,” Tuchel said.

England are expected to retain much of the side that defeated Croatia. Harry Kane will once again lead the attack, supported by Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke, while Declan Rice anchors the midfield.

Although Bukayo Saka has recovered from an Achilles concern, he is likely to begin on the bench.

Tuesday’s clash marks the first competitive meeting between Ghana and England. The only previous encounter between the two nations came in an international friendly at Wembley Stadium in 2011. On that occasion, England led through Andy Carroll before Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan rescued a deserved 1-1 draw for the Black Stars.

England have never lost to an African nation at the World Cup, recording five wins and three draws in eight matches. Ghana now have the opportunity to become the first African side to defeat the Three Lions on football’s biggest stage.

The Black Stars will also draw inspiration from their own proud World Cup history. Ghana remain the only African nation to have reached the quarter-finals of the tournament on multiple occasions and have consistently proven capable of rising to the occasion when facing elite opposition.

Both teams enter the match with three points, making this one of the most significant fixtures of the second round of group-stage matches.

A Ghana victory would secure qualification for the knockout stages and place the Black Stars firmly in control of Group L heading into their final game against Croatia.

England, meanwhile, know another win would confirm their place in the last 32 and strengthen their ambitions of ending decades of World Cup disappointment.

For Ghana, however, this is about more than qualification. It is an opportunity to challenge one of world football’s most celebrated nations, silence the doubters and prove that rankings mean little when determination, belief and national pride take centre stage
