Climate Change making lives of Ghanaians worse – Afrobarometer report
Six out of 10 (60%) Ghanaians have said the impacts of climate change is making life worse.
This is per the new survey by research firm, Afrobarometer.
According to Afrobarometer, the number of Ghanaians impacted by climate change has increased by 12% in the last two years – since 2020.
Per the survey, a larger percentage of Ghanaians are calling on government to take urgent actions towards curbing climate change.
The current change in climate has become another headache to lots of Ghanaians aside the economy crisis.
Most citizens, per the survey, called on the government to mitigate the impacts of climate change whereas others believe the ordinary citizen is also a factor of the climate change hence the call for urgent action.
According to the Afrobarometer survey, in Ghana, about 44% of adults know about climate change, narrowing down its survey on among Ghanaians who are aware of Climate change.
More than 3/4 says that the ordinary citizen can assist in curbing the climate change (77%) and believe that the government needs to take immediate action to limit climate change even if it means some persons losing their jobs or causing other harm to the economy (87%)
In the heat of this debate, citizens believe the government (43%) or the ordinary citizen (42%) have the responsibility to fight climate change and limit its impact.
The impact of this change on businesses and industry amounts to (9%) while the rich or developed countries (3%) and that of traditional leaders as at (2%).
On the other hand, a small majority of (53%) say government is doing very bad in the fight against the change, while an (81%) majority says government, business and industry (74%) developed countries (69%) and citizens (67%) have a lot more to do when it comes to climate change.
The Afrobarometer’s survey team led by Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD) conducted interviews of a nationally representative sample of 2,369 adult Ghanaians in April 2022.
