  • Como Humiliation Exposes a Manchester United Crisis Beyond Results

Manchester United’s 4–1 defeat at Como was not merely another damaging result in a difficult season. It was a brutally clear picture of a team losing its grip on the basic requirements of elite football: concentration, intensity, defensive awareness and collective conviction.

Como, coached with clarity and courage by Cesc Fabregas, did not defeat United through fortune or a single tactical trick. The Italian side overwhelmed them by playing faster, working harder and understanding their responsibilities more completely. Nico Paz scored twice and created another goal, while Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon completed a victory that exposed the widening distance between United’s reputation and their present reality.

Joshua Zirkzee’s stoppage-time consolation changed nothing of substance. United left Italy winless in seven matches across all competitions, with three draws and four defeats, and sitting on only three points after three Champions League fixtures. The danger now concerns more than qualification. This performance raised questions about whether Michael Carrick can still generate the urgency and belief required to reverse the slide.

The collapse began after 118 seconds. Harry Maguire allowed Paz too much room, and the Argentine curled an accomplished finish into the top corner. Conceding early has become a damaging habit: United are the first English club to concede within two minutes in consecutive major European matches, having also fallen behind after 47 seconds against Atletico Madrid.

Early goals can disrupt any plan, but United’s response was more alarming than the concession. Their midfield remained static, runners were not tracked and Como repeatedly found space between and beyond the visitors’ lines. Instead of imposing themselves after the setback, United appeared unsure whether to press, retreat or protect central areas. That indecision allowed Como to dictate the rhythm.

Fabregas’ side completed 594 passes, the highest total recorded by a team against United in a Champions League match since Barcelona completed 725 in April 2019. The comparison is deeply uncomfortable. Como should not require Barcelona’s historic status to dominate possession and movement against one of England’s richest clubs. Yet on this evidence, organisation and courage mattered far more than payroll, heritage or shirt colour.

Carrick attempted to intervene at half-time, introducing Amad Diallo and Carlos Baleba for Andrey Santos and Matheus Cunha. Within four minutes, however, the deficit doubled. Paz released Douvikas, who escaped a disoriented Matthijs de Ligt and finished confidently. De Ligt was making his first start in 325 days following back trouble, but United’s dysfunction cannot be placed on one returning defender.

The third goal was even more revealing. Baleba attempted a risky turn in his own half without adequate cover, lost possession and watched Paz race through to score. It combined poor decision-making with a structural absence of protection. A functioning side can survive an individual mistake because teammates occupy sensible positions. United’s spacing instead converted one error into an open route to goal.

Ramon’s 76th-minute header, delivered after another sweeping Como attack, added humiliation. An unmarked centre-back scoring the fourth illustrated how badly United had lost control of assignments inside their own penalty area. Fernandes, normally the emotional and creative centre of the team, was largely peripheral and now has only one goal involvement across his past nine club appearances.

Carrick’s reaction was unusually severe. “I’m really angry,” he said, describing the night as difficult and insisting that representing United was bigger than playing for him personally. Asked whether every player matched his commitment, his answer was telling: “I’d like to think so. I didn’t like what I saw tonight though.”

That final sentence shifts the debate from tactics towards trust. Managers can alter formations, rotate personnel and redesign pressing patterns. They cannot easily repair a dressing room in which effort, confidence or belief has become negotiable. Carrick has defended his players repeatedly, but his public dissatisfaction suggests patience is thinning as quickly as the margin for recovery.

Paul Merson offered the harshest interpretation. United, he argued, remain judged through memories of Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Roy Keane, even though the current team is “a million miles away” from that standard. He did not regard defeat by Como as a shock. That assessment may hurt more than the scoreline because it captures the normalisation of United’s decline.

The club’s name still creates expectations its football cannot satisfy. Opponents no longer approach United principally with fear; many see a vulnerable midfield, uncertain defensive line and fragile response to adversity. Como played like the larger football team because their structure gave individuals confidence. United played like strangers carrying the burden of a famous badge.

United’s Champions League position is now precarious. Three points from three matches leave them facing an uphill route through the league phase. Qualification remains possible, but the mathematics are less important than the evidence. A team that cannot protect itself out of possession or respond coherently after conceding will struggle against any organised European opponent.

The immediate test comes against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. Victory would provide relief, but a narrow win alone would not answer the questions created in Como. United must show recognisable collective behaviour: an aggressive but coordinated press, compact distances between units, disciplined tracking and quicker ball circulation. Above all, supporters need to see a team prepared to compete before circumstances become desperate.

Como’s triumph should also be understood positively. Fabregas has built a side capable of combining possession with penetration, and Paz supplied the intelligence and quality that United lacked. Their victory demonstrated that coherent coaching can compress financial and historical differences. Modern football rewards teams that know what they are trying to do.

United currently do not. The late goal may prevent the scoreline from looking even more severe, but it cannot disguise a performance in which the visitors were second best technically, tactically and emotionally. The decisive issue is no longer whether United can recreate their past.

It is whether they can establish a credible present before this difficult season becomes another lost one. That transformation must begin with effort becoming visible before tactical sophistication can matter.
