Conference League: Joao Felix Shines with Brace as Chelsea Triumphs 4-1 Over Panathinaikos
Joao Felix ended his goal drought with a stunning brace, leading Chelsea to a commanding 4-1 victory against Panathinaikos in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday.
The Portugal forward, who has struggled since returning to Chelsea in August, seized the opportunity to impress manager Enzo Maresca, scoring twice after netting only once in his previous seven appearances this season.
Felix opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, starting the play with a cushioned header to Mykhailo Mudryk before finishing from the Ukrainian’s cross. Mudryk then doubled Chelsea’s lead with a powerful strike in the 49th minute.
Felix struck again in the 55th minute with a deflected 20-yard shot, solidifying Chelsea’s advantage. Christopher Nkunku added a penalty in the 59th minute before Facundo Pellistri scored a consolation goal for Panathinaikos in the 69th minute.
Prior to the match, Panathinaikos honored defender George Baldock, who tragically drowned earlier this month, with heartfelt tributes from teammates and fans.
Fiorentina Survives St Gallen Scare
In another match, Fiorentina overcame a scare in their 4-2 win at St Gallen. The Swiss side initially took the lead, but Fiorentina equalized through Lucas Martinez and later reclaimed the lead twice, with Jonathan Ikone scoring twice. Robin Gosens sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal, marking Fiorentina’s second consecutive victory in the tournament.
Shamrock Rovers Dominate Larne
In a competitive clash, Shamrock Rovers triumphed 4-1 over Larne, with goals from Joshua Honohan, Johnny Kenny, and an own goal from Tomas Cosgrove, before Graham Burke rounded off the scoring. The match, held at Windsor Park, showcased Rovers’ dominance from the outset.
Hearts Continue Strong Form
Hearts also secured a win, defeating Omonia Nicosia 2-0 at Tynecastle. Alan Forrest and Blair Spittal found the net, helping the club build on their previous victory under new manager Neil Critchley.
