Daily minimum wage rises by GHS 1.35 to GHS 14.88; effective January 2023
Government, through the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffuor Awuah and the Tripartite Committee, has raised the daily minimum rage by some GHS 1.35 from GHS 13.53 to GHS 14.88.
The increment marks a 10 percentage points rise in the daily minimum wage.
“An increase in the NDMW by 10% over the 2022 NDMW which translates into a new NDMW of GHC14.88; and a Cost-of-Living Allowance (COLA) of 15% over the 2023 NDMW,” said the Committee.
The Tripartite Committee in a communique issued on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, noted the increment in the daily minimum wage was on back of considerations of the current economic challenges, cost of living, sustainability of businesses and desirability of attaining a higher level of employment as well as the need for rapid restoration of macroeconomic stability.
Adding that, the new daily minimum wage takes effect January 1, 2023.
Prior to the increment in the daily minimum wage, norvanreports reported that the daily minimum wage was highly likely to be increased as a means to cushion citizens amid these times of economic hardship.
The determination was based on Section 113 (1) (a) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
