  • E-Visa, Free Visa Entry: Ghana Makes Travel Easier for Africans

Ghana has launched its first fully digital e-visa system and abolished visa fees for African travellers, in a policy shift aimed at improving ease of travel, deepening regional integration and strengthening the country’s position as a gateway for investment and commerce in West Africa.

The reform, announced on Africa Day by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in Accra, allows visitors to complete visa applications online without physically visiting Ghanaian embassies or consulates.

The move is expected to reduce processing delays and remove administrative bottlenecks that have long affected travellers, businesses, investors and conference participants seeking entry into Ghana.

Authorities say the policy forms part of the government’s broader economic modernisation agenda under President John Dramani Mahama’s “Ghana Open for Business” initiative, which seeks to improve investor confidence, expand tourism inflows and deepen Ghana’s role within the African Continental Free Trade Area ecosystem.

Under the new arrangement, African nationals will no longer pay visa fees to enter Ghana. However, travellers will still be required to apply electronically and undergo digital security vetting before approval.

Government officials insist the policy is not a relaxation of border controls, but a modernisation of immigration systems designed to balance mobility with security oversight.

The e-visa infrastructure has been integrated with Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record systems, alongside international criminal intelligence databases, to strengthen pre-arrival screening and risk assessment.

The initiative reflects a broader continental shift as African governments increasingly move toward liberalised travel regimes to stimulate intra-African trade, labour mobility, tourism and investment under the AfCFTA framework.

For Ghana, the timing is significant. As host of the AfCFTA Secretariat, the country has repeatedly positioned itself as a platform for continental trade, regional business expansion and investor engagement. Easier movement of people is therefore becoming central to the country’s broader investment pitch.

Analysts say improved travel access could strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness as a regional business, tourism and conference destination, particularly as African economies compete more aggressively for foreign direct investment, logistics activity, financial services expansion and digital enterprise growth.

The government also disclosed that the digital visa platform is being implemented through a public-private partnership structure. Officials say this will reduce the fiscal burden on the state while accelerating deployment of the technology infrastructure needed to support the new system.

For businesses operating across multiple African markets, the reforms could help lower travel friction and improve executive mobility. This is particularly important for firms in banking, logistics, manufacturing, mining, technology and cross-border trade, where speed of travel often affects deal execution and operational coordination.

The launch also comes at a time when governments globally are accelerating the digitisation of immigration and border management systems in response to rising demand for faster processing, stronger data security and more efficient migration administration.

Ghana’s policy shift may therefore carry both symbolic and economic weight. Symbolically, it signals a stronger commitment to African integration and freer movement across the continent. Economically, it could help Ghana convert its diplomatic and AfCFTA positioning into practical advantages for tourism, investment, trade facilitation and regional services.

The success of the reform, however, will depend on execution. The e-visa platform must be reliable, fast, secure and user-friendly. It must also be supported by efficient airport processing, strong data protection safeguards and clear communication to travellers, airlines and foreign missions.

For now, Ghana’s message is clear: it wants to make entry easier, faster and more predictable for African travellers while retaining the security architecture needed for modern border management.

If well implemented, the e-visa system and visa fee waiver could strengthen Ghana’s standing as one of Africa’s more open and business-friendly destinations not only for visitors, but for investors looking for a credible base from which to access the continent’s expanding market.
