- England Lose Palmer, Rice and Rashford as Five Withdrawals Hit Tuchel’s Nations League Plans
England’s preparations for the start of their UEFA Nations League campaign have been disrupted by five injury withdrawals, with Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Tino Livramento and Kobbie Mainoo all dropping out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
The withdrawals come only days after Palmer had been recalled following his omission from England’s 2026 World Cup squad, while Rice and Rashford had also been expected to play central roles in the opening fixtures.
Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White have been brought in as replacements.
The timing is particularly difficult for Tuchel because England begin their Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on September 26. They then travel to face the Czech Republic and Croatia before completing the window with another home fixture against the Czechs.
The extended international period is the first under FIFA’s revised calendar, which combines what were previously the September and October windows into one three-week block.
Palmer’s withdrawal is one of the more significant setbacks because the Chelsea midfielder had only just returned to the national-team picture.
Tuchel recalled him after a strong start to the 2026/27 season, during which he scored four goals and provided two assists in his opening club appearances.
His inclusion had been one of the headline decisions in a squad containing 10 changes from England’s World Cup group.
Tuchel had publicly challenged Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold to prove they could force their way back into the core of the national team after missing the World Cup squad.
Palmer’s injury now delays that opportunity and removes one of England’s most technically creative attacking midfielders before a demanding opening game.
The loss also reduces Tuchel’s options between midfield and attack, particularly against a Spain side expected to dominate possession for long periods.
Rice’s absence may be even more structurally important. The Arsenal midfielder provides defensive control, ball progression and leadership through central areas, qualities that become particularly valuable against elite opposition.
Without him and Mainoo, England’s midfield balance will need to be adjusted at short notice, increasing the importance of the remaining central players and the two emergency call-ups.
Rashford’s withdrawal further narrows the attacking options available to Tuchel. Although England retain several forwards, the loss of a player capable of carrying the ball at pace and attacking space behind a defence changes the profile of the squad.
In a Nations League group containing Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic, those tactical differences may matter as much as the raw number of available players.
Livramento’s absence also removes versatility from the defensive unit. The Newcastle United full-back can operate on either side and offers an athletic option in wide areas, while his withdrawal reduces the number of alternatives available if Tuchel wants to vary his full-back structure.
England’s squad had already undergone substantial change after the World Cup, making further late disruption particularly unwelcome.
Garner and Gibbs-White now have an opportunity created by circumstances rather than the original selection. Garner’s inclusion gives Tuchel another central midfield option, while Gibbs-White adds creativity and the ability to operate between the lines.
Late call-ups often arrive with limited preparation time, but a strong contribution can quickly alter a player’s standing within the national-team hierarchy.
The withdrawals also underline how little margin international coaches now have when managing squads drawn from a congested club calendar. Players arrive carrying different workloads, recovery programmes and injury histories, leaving national teams vulnerable to multiple changes even after squads have been announced.
For Tuchel, that means the tactical work planned around his original group must now be adapted before England’s most difficult fixture of the window.
England enter the Nations League after winning bronze at the 2026 World Cup, their best finish since lifting the trophy in 1966. That result raised expectations around a side Tuchel has said should be targeting Euro 2028, making the Nations League an important part of the next cycle rather than merely a set of post-World Cup fixtures.
The challenge against Spain is therefore likely to be viewed as an early measure of how quickly the team can rebuild momentum after the tournament.
Tuchel had already used his first post-World Cup squad to reopen competition for places. Alexander-Arnold returned, Palmer was recalled, while younger players such as Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha were introduced. At the same time, established names including Jordan Henderson, John Stones and Noni Madueke were left out, signalling that selection would remain fluid.
The five withdrawals now make that competition even less predictable. Players originally viewed as supporting options may be required to start important matches, while Garner and Gibbs-White could move quickly from late additions to meaningful contributors.
Tuchel’s task is to preserve tactical coherence despite the disruption and avoid allowing the absences to become the dominant story around the opening international window.
The immediate focus will be Spain, where England’s midfield and attacking depth will be tested without several of their most recognisable players.
A strong performance would reinforce Tuchel’s argument that the squad is broad enough to cope with injuries and maintain standards across multiple positions.
A difficult start, however, would quickly shift attention back to how much the late withdrawals altered the balance of the team.
For England, the timing could scarcely be more inconvenient. The Nations League was supposed to mark the beginning of the next phase after the World Cup, but Tuchel is instead starting that phase with a squad already reshaped by injury.
The next few matches will show whether the replacements merely fill spaces on the team sheet or can help turn an enforced reshuffle into an opportunity for new players to stake their claim.
