EPA, Energy Commission reduce importation of HCFC-based air conditioners
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) together with Energy Commission, have begun to implement a Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) in fulfilment of the nation’s obligations under the R22 Montreal Protocol.
Ghana’s obligations under the R22 Montreal Protocol is to phase-out the consumption of HFCFs by controlling the importation of HFCF based equipment including air-conditioners.
In a joint statement by the EPA and Energy Commission, the phasing-out of HFCFs begun in January this year following a stakeholder engagement with importers of HFCF equipment.

Per the agreement reached between the two state agencies and importers, a quota system with regards to the import of HFCF-based equipment will be imposed on importers starting January 1, 2022.
“The Energy Commission will from the same date (January 1, 2022) reject applications for import from non-quota beneficiaries,” the statement added.
