- Eriksen Leaves Wolfsburg by Mutual Consent to Stay Closer to Family in Denmark
Christian Eriksen has ended his contract with VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent, bringing his one-year spell in Germany to an early close as the Danish midfielder prioritises being closer to his family.
Wolfsburg confirmed on September 23 that the agreement, which had originally been due to run until June 30, 2027, had been terminated at Eriksen’s request. The 34-year-old leaves after making 34 appearances for the club in all competitions.
“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together,” Eriksen said in the club’s statement.
He described his time at Wolfsburg as one of “many highs and lows” and said he remained convinced the club was well placed to return to the Bundesliga.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent in September 2025 on a two-year deal, bringing with him experience from Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Brentford and Manchester United.
He made 34 appearances across the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and relegation play-offs, scoring three goals and, according to Wolfsburg’s own figures, providing 10 assists. His first season ended with the club dropping into Germany’s second tier.
The midfielder had not featured for Wolfsburg this season following a medical incident while on international duty during the summer.
In July, Wolfsburg announced that Eriksen would complete an individual rehabilitation programme in Denmark after discussions with the club’s sporting management.
Wolfsburg said at the time that it remained in regular contact with Eriksen and the doctors overseeing his recovery.
That arrangement effectively moved Eriksen away from Wolfsburg’s day-to-day first-team environment even before the contract termination. His priority increasingly became rehabilitation and proximity to his family, while Wolfsburg entered a rebuilding phase following relegation.
The separation therefore appears to have developed from both personal circumstances and the club’s changing sporting situation.
Wolfsburg Managing Director Sport Dieter Hecking said the club had deliberately left the decision over Eriksen’s future to the player. “For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s,” Hecking said, adding that Wolfsburg wanted to give him freedom in what the club described as a particular situation.
Hecking also praised Eriksen’s influence despite his relatively short stay. He said the midfielder had “left a lasting impression” on teammates, staff and supporters and highlighted the Dane’s approachable and grounded personality.
Wolfsburg said it had accepted Eriksen’s request to terminate the contract and wished him and his family well.
For Eriksen, the decision brings another significant chapter of a remarkable career to an end. His move to Wolfsburg had come after more than 300 Premier League appearances and around 100 games across the Champions League and Europa League, giving the German club one of the most experienced midfielders in European football. His spell, however, ultimately lasted only a single season.
The Dane thanked those who supported him during his time in Germany. “It was a great pleasure for me to play for you, and I will look back fondly on this period,” he said. His message focused less on footballing disappointment than on gratitude and the importance of returning closer to his family.
Wolfsburg, meanwhile, are attempting to rebuild after relegation and have already reshaped their squad extensively. The club’s sporting leadership said earlier this month that the summer represented more than a conventional transfer window and instead described it as “a new beginning”, with 22 departures and 10 new arrivals. Eriksen’s exit now becomes another part of that transition.
The decision also removes uncertainty over Eriksen’s contractual status while allowing Wolfsburg to continue restructuring for a promotion challenge.
For the player, it creates the space to focus on family and rehabilitation without the immediate demands of a club contract. Neither Eriksen nor Wolfsburg announced what his next professional step might be.
His departure is therefore less a conventional football transfer than an agreed separation shaped by personal circumstances.
Wolfsburg have allowed an experienced player to leave a year before his contract expires, while Eriksen has chosen proximity to home over continuing the agreement.
The next chapter remains unclear, but his final message to the club suggests the decision was made cooperatively rather than contentiously.
