  • F1 Authentics Launches Mclaren Fuel-Cell Memorabilia from Häkkinen And Räikkönen Cars

F1 Authentics has launched a new memorabilia product giving collectors the chance to own a section of fuel cell taken from either Mika Häkkinen’s 1998 McLaren MP4/13 or Kimi Räikkönen’s 2006 McLaren MP4-21.

The pieces will be included in each of 500 limited-edition Mystery Boxes currently being sold through the Formula One memorabilia platform. The company said Mystery Box customers will be “the first collectors to own one of these fuel cell pieces”.

The products draw on two significant periods in McLaren’s Formula One history. Häkkinen’s component comes from the 1998 season in which he won his first Drivers’ World Championship, taking eight Grand Prix victories as he established himself as one of the dominant drivers of the era. Räikkönen’s piece comes from his final season with McLaren in 2006 before moving to Ferrari.

Each fuel-cell section has been cut using water-jet technology and presented in a premium display case, transforming a normally hidden component into a collectible object.

F1 Authentics said the initiative allows fans to own “a component normally hidden within the car” rather than the more familiar bodywork, brake disc or skid-plank memorabilia already sold in the market. The launch therefore extends the commercialisation of historic Formula One machinery into parts that have traditionally had little visibility outside engineering circles.

The fuel cell itself sits inside the monocoque, behind the driver and ahead of the engine, and forms part of the car’s fuel-storage system. It is a flexible, leak-resistant bladder manufactured from military-grade ballistic material and designed to contain the fuel needed over the course of a race.

By cutting sections from original cells, F1 Authentics is effectively converting an engineering component into a product aimed at collectors seeking direct physical links to historic cars.

The Häkkinen connection is likely to carry particular appeal because the MP4/13 was central to one of McLaren’s most successful modern seasons. The Finn’s 1998 title was his first world championship and came during a period in which McLaren re-established itself at the front of Formula One.

F1 Authentics said the item comes from “his first World Championship-winning season”, positioning the memorabilia around both technical provenance and sporting significance.

Räikkönen’s MP4-21 represents a different kind of milestone. The 2006 campaign marked the end of his five-year spell with McLaren, during which he became one of Formula One’s leading drivers before joining Ferrari and later winning the 2007 championship. F1 Authentics describes the component as coming from “the final chapter of his five-year spell with the team”.

The fuel-cell product is part of a broader Mystery Box campaign that combines guaranteed items with unrevealed memorabilia. Every box will also contain an authentic piece of bodywork from Max Verstappen’s 2021 World Championship-winning Red Bull RB16B, giving buyers a component linked to another title-winning season.

Additional contents may include bodywork, skid-plank sections, brake-disc creations and signed merchandise, according to the company.

One customer will also win an official Formula One replica front wing and nose valued at £14,999, with the winner able to choose from a selection of participating teams. That prize adds a higher-value element to the limited-run campaign and underlines the increasingly sophisticated commercial market surrounding Formula One collectibles.

The company has not disclosed the probability distribution or individual value of the other mystery items beyond the guaranteed components.

The model also reflects a broader shift in sports memorabilia from traditional autographs and apparel towards authenticated physical pieces of competition machinery.

Formula One is particularly suited to that market because retired cars contain large numbers of components that carry provenance connected to specific drivers, teams and seasons. Products such as fuel-cell sections allow those assets to be divided into smaller collectibles that can reach a wider audience than complete cars or full-size bodywork.

For rights holders and teams, the commercial logic is equally significant. Historic components that might otherwise remain in storage or have limited standalone use can be repurposed into licensed products, creating additional revenue while extending fan engagement around famous drivers and championship-winning machinery.

Memento Exclusives, which operates F1 Authentics, says its broader model is designed to help sports properties generate “incremental revenue streams” while giving supporters opportunities to “Own the Moment”.

The company has built its business around licensing, e-commerce, auctions, gifting and physical retail, initially through Formula One before expanding into other sports.

Its memorabilia strategy relies heavily on authenticity and provenance, since the value of such products depends on buyers being confident that the materials genuinely originated from the cars or equipment described. The use of specific chassis references such as the MP4/13 and MP4-21 is therefore central to the product’s appeal.

For collectors, the attraction will largely depend on the historical significance attached to the driver and car rather than the raw material value of the fuel-cell section itself.

A piece from Häkkinen’s championship-winning 1998 campaign carries a different narrative from one linked to Räikkönen’s final McLaren season, while the guaranteed Verstappen component adds a more recent championship connection. The mystery-box structure blends those provenance stories with scarcity, chance and exclusivity.

The new release also shows how Formula One’s growing commercial ecosystem is extending beyond races, broadcasting and sponsorship into increasingly specialised fan products. F1 Authentics is effectively monetising parts of the sport’s engineering history by turning original components into display pieces aimed at collectors around the world.

In doing so, the company is betting that fans will increasingly value not just merchandise carrying a driver’s name, but physical fragments of the machines that helped define their careers.
