FDA cautions nightclubs, pubs against abuse of laughing gas
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned against the abusive use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) by nightclubs, pubs, party organizers and the general public at large.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, the Authority noted nitrous oxide is extremely hazardous with users exposed to risks of low blood pressure, heart attacks and anaemia.
Adding that abusers of the gas, are also prone to suffocation and loss of consciousness.
“Long-term recreational use of laughing gas could also compromise the immune system, cause mental and neurological disorders and depression,” the statement added.
The Authority has therefore urged nightclubs, pubs and party organizers to desist from the use of laughing gas.
“The public is hereby urged to promptly report to the FDA on the abuse of nitrous gas,” it added.
Nitrous Oxide, the FDA notes, are used by nightclubs, pubs and party organizers in the form of balloons and canisters to induce euphoria and laughter.
