- FIFA Dismisses Bias Claims After Argentina’s Dramatic Win Over Egypt
FIFA has rejected allegations that match officials are favouring Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting referees perform their duties independently and with integrity following controversy surrounding the defending champions’ dramatic victory over Egypt.
The debate intensified after Argentina staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 in Tuesday’s Round of 16 clash in Atlanta. Lionel Messi inspired the turnaround as the holders scored three times in the final 11 minutes to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan reacted angrily after the match, claiming his side had been denied a penalty moments before Enzo Fernández scored Argentina’s stoppage-time winner. Earlier in the contest, Egypt also had a goal ruled out following a VAR review.
The defeat sparked emotional scenes at full-time, with members of Egypt’s coaching staff confronting referee François Letexier. Goalkeeping coach Saafan El-Sagheer was sent off during the post-match altercation.
Responding to the criticism, FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer, Pierluigi Collina, defended the tournament’s officials and rejected suggestions that referees could be influenced by outside forces.
“Constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport,” Collina said in an interview published by FIFA.
“Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials. Match officials make honest decisions and, just like players and coaches, they always try to do their best.”
Collina also dismissed suggestions that FIFA President Gianni Infantino or any other official could influence refereeing decisions, stressing that the officiating team operates independently.
Hassan, however, maintained that Egypt had been treated unfairly.
“We were better, but football is unfair,” the Egypt coach said after the match. “We have been treated unfairly today.”
Forward Mostafa Ziko also questioned the officiating after Egypt surrendered a two-goal lead in the closing stages.
Despite the controversy, FIFA has stated there is no evidence to support claims of corruption or match manipulation at the tournament.
Argentina’s victory keeps alive their bid to retain the World Cup, with Messi’s equaliser taking his tally to 21 World Cup goals and moving him back to the top of the Golden Boot standings.
The defending champions will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of a second consecutive World Cup title.
