Finance Minister to Streamline and Cut Wasteful Spending at COCOBOD
The government has instructed the Ministry of Finance to introduce measures aimed at strengthening management and expenditure oversight at the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the directive on Thursday, February 12, during a press briefing, detailing steps to stabilise the cocoa sector amid recent operational challenges.
According to Dr. Forson, the reforms seek to enhance value for money and boost efficiency within COCOBOD’s operations.
“Cabinet has tasked the Ministry of Finance with initiating immediate reforms at COCOBOD to streamline operations and reduce unnecessary costs. Wasteful and uncontrolled spending must be halted without delay,” he stated.
The announcement comes after an emergency meeting convened by President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, February 11, to tackle urgent concerns in the cocoa sector.
Recent delays in payments to cocoa farmers have raised alarm among stakeholders, prompting calls for swift reforms to safeguard Ghana’s standing as the second eading global cocoa producer.
