  • Financial Stocks Gain but Weak Trading Activity Pushes GSE Composite Index Lower

The Ghana Stock Exchange closed weaker on Thursday, May 14, 2026, as low investor participation and cautious trading sentiment pushed the benchmark index into negative territory despite gains in some financial stocks.

According to market data from SIC Brokerage, the GSE Composite Index declined to 14,332.97 points from 14,352.08 points previously, trimming its year-to-date return to 63.43% from 63.65%.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index, however, advanced to 8,072.33 points from 8,049.64 points, lifting its year-to-date gain to 73.70%, compared with 73.22% in the previous session. Market capitalisation rose marginally to GH¢265.13 billion, from GH¢264.55 billion, even as trading activity slowed sharply.

Total volume traded fell to 97,394 shares, down from 1.07 million shares in the previous session, representing a decline of about 90.86%. Total value traded also dropped to GH¢4.94 million, from GH¢5.79 million, a fall of 14.65%.

The weaker activity suggests investors remained selective, with trading interest concentrated in a handful of counters.

MTN Ghana dominated traded value, recording 515,689 shares worth GH¢3.35 million. The stock closed at GH¢6.50, down GH¢0.02, but still maintained a year-to-date gain of 54.76%.

Other heavily traded equities included Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, with 230,686 shares valued at GH¢351,665.62; TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana, with 9,614 shares worth GH¢317,185.50; GOIL, with 33,460 shares valued at GH¢265,672.40; and Benso Oil Palm Plantation, with 1,490 shares worth GH¢127,395.00.

Price movements were evenly split between gainers and decliners.

On the gainers’ side, Clydestone Ghana led the market after rising by GH¢0.17 to close at GH¢1.97, extending its year-to-date return to 328.26%. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated gained GH¢0.05 to close at GH¢1.53, while Societe Generale Ghana advanced by GH¢0.07 to GH¢6.46.

Intravenous Infusions also edged higher by GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢0.06, representing a year-to-date gain of 20.00%.

On the decliners’ side, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana led the laggards, falling by GH¢1.90 to close at GH¢32.99. CalBank declined by GH¢0.04 to GH¢0.76, while SIC Insurance lost GH¢0.18 to close at GH¢5.77. MTN Ghana also slipped by GH¢0.02 to end the session at GH¢6.50.

The market’s performance reflects a familiar pattern: strong year-to-date gains remain intact, but near-term sentiment is becoming more cautious as investors lock in profits and trading liquidity thins.

For April 2026, the GSE Composite Index gained 2,070.39 points month-on-month, representing a 22.72% increase, compared with 24.69% over the same period last year. The GSE Financial Stocks Index gained 852.7 points, placing its year-to-date return at 90.21% for April.

Top price gainers for April included SIC Insurance, up 71.21%; GCB Bank, up 53.55%; Clydestone Ghana, up 48.15%; and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, up 46.31%. The major price losers were Access Bank Ghana, down 34.36%, and Benso Oil Palm Plantation, down 14.50%.

Investors are also watching upcoming dividend payments. GCB Bank is expected to pay GH¢1.00 per share on June 30, 2026; Republic Bank Ghana will pay GH¢0.05 on June 1; MTN Ghana will pay GH¢0.03 for the first quarter on June 18; and Fan Milk will pay GH¢0.11 on June 30.

The next trading session is likely to open cautiously, with attention expected to remain on MTN Ghana, financial stocks and dividend-paying counters. While the market’s year-to-date gains remain strong, Thursday’s weak participation suggests investors are becoming more selective after a powerful rally.
