- Formula 1: Hamilton Ends Ferrari Drought With Stunning Barcelona Triumph
Lewis Hamilton produced a vintage performance to secure his long-awaited first Formula One Grand Prix victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Sunday, ending Mercedes’ dominance in the 2026 season with a commanding triumph in Spain.
The seven-time world champion crossed the finish line 19.5 seconds ahead of George Russell, while Lando Norris completed an historic all-British podium for McLaren the first such podium in Formula One since 1968.
Hamilton’s triumph was Ferrari’s reward for a bold three-stop strategy that proved decisive in the scorching Barcelona heat. Starting on soft tyres, Hamilton initially failed to overtake pole-sitter Russell at the start, but Ferrari’s gamble paid off perfectly when a Virtual Safety Car handed the Briton a crucial free pit stop later in the race.
From there, Hamilton controlled the Grand Prix with authority, producing a series of blistering laps to steadily pull away from the chasing Mercedes pair.
Russell had started strongly after edging Hamilton to pole position by just 0.064 seconds in qualifying and led comfortably through the opening phase of the race. However, Mercedes soon realised that championship leader Kimi Antonelli possessed stronger pace.
Antonelli stayed within striking distance of his teammate throughout the race and eventually overtook Russell late on to move into second place. But disaster struck with only a few laps remaining when the young Italian suffered a mechanical failure and was forced to retire dramatically on Lap 62 of 66, ending his five-race winning streak.
Hamilton’s path to victory was further cleared moments later when Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc also retired after suffering power steering problems following a trip through the gravel.
The late drama allowed Norris to inherit third place after another solid drive for McLaren, while Max Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull Racing ahead of teammate Isack Hadjar in sixth. Splitting the Red Bull pair was McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in fifth.
The midfield battle also delivered plenty of excitement as Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto secured seventh and eighth for Alpine, though Colapinto faced a post-race investigation for a yellow flag infringement.
Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad completed the top ten for Racing Bulls, marking consecutive double-points finishes for the team.
Outside the points, Gabriel Bortoleto finished 11th for Audi ahead of home favourite Carlos Sainz Jr. in 12th. Esteban Ocon placed 13th for Haas F1 Team, while Sergio Perez was the final classified finisher in 14th for Cadillac Formula 1 Team.
Alex Albon was not officially classified after losing significant time with a mechanical issue in his Williams Racing car.
The race featured seven retirements in total. Alongside Antonelli and Leclerc, Lance Stroll retired early with gearbox trouble for Aston Martin, while teammate Fernando Alonso also failed to finish his home Grand Prix after starting from the pit lane.
Valtteri Bottas retired as a precaution for Cadillac, Nico Hulkenberg failed to finish for Audi despite running in the points earlier on, and Oliver Bearman endured a late retirement for Haas.
Hamilton’s emotional victory marked his first Grand Prix win in nearly two years and significantly tightened the championship battle. The Ferrari star now sits 41 points behind Antonelli in the standings, while Russell closed to within 50 points of his Mercedes teammate.
Speaking after the race, Hamilton paid tribute to Ferrari and the fans who supported him through a difficult start to life with the Italian giants.
“First I have to say a huge grazia to everyone here, my team here at Ferrari, everyone back at the factory,” Hamilton said. “We never gave up hope. We made so many improvements and I’ve got the greatest fanbase a sportsman could ever ask for.”
Formula One will now pause briefly before returning for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring later this month, where Hamilton and Ferrari will aim to build on a breakthrough victory that could reshape the 2026 title race.
