  • Four Stocks Control 86% of GSE Volume Amid Mixed Price Movements

Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange weakened on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as the value and volume of transactions declined from the previous session, while investor activity remained heavily concentrated in a small group of equities.

A total of 798,643 shares changed hands for GH¢2.00 million during the 7,326th trading session. This compared with 904,876 shares valued at GH¢2.35 million in the preceding session on October 26.

The latest figures represent an 11.74% session-on-session decline in trading volume and a 14.54% fall in turnover. In absolute terms, the market traded 106,233 fewer shares, while the value of transactions decreased by GH¢341,175.86.

The sharper decline in value relative to volume suggests that Tuesday’s trading tilted slightly towards lower-priced securities. Average value per share declined to approximately GH¢2.51 from GH¢2.59 in the previous session.

Ordinary shares accounted for 657,616 shares valued at GH¢1.93 million, representing 82.34% of total market volume and 96.40% of turnover. The Ghana Alternative Market contributed 141,022 shares worth GH¢69,901.71, while five units of the NewGold exchange-traded fund generated GH¢2,311.80.

Despite the overall decline in trading, market activity remained highly concentrated. Kasapreko PLC recorded the largest volume, with 233,811 shares traded for GH¢422,542.31. CalBank followed with 225,685 shares valued at GH¢166,550.71.

MTN Ghana traded 116,877 shares but dominated the market by value, generating GH¢762,787.33. That represented 38.06% of the entire session’s turnover.

Together, MTN Ghana, Kasapreko and CalBank accounted for GH¢1.35 million, or 67.44% of total market value. When Intravenous Infusions was added, the four most actively traded stocks controlled 86.11% of total volume.

Such concentration indicates that headline turnover continues to depend on relatively few counters. Although liquidity was available in selected equities, activity across the broader market remained thin, with several listed companies recording either negligible trades or no transactions.

Price movements were mixed, with four advancers and five decliners across the main market and the Ghana Alternative Market.

Ghana Oil Company emerged as the strongest main-market performer, rising by GH¢0.24, or 4.56%, from GH¢5.26 to GH¢5.50. The recovery followed recent weakness in the petroleum marketing company’s shares and may indicate selective bargain hunting by investors.

SIC Insurance gained 1.77% to close at GH¢4.61, while CalBank advanced by 1.37% to GH¢0.74. MTN Ghana added 0.62%, closing at GH¢6.53 after trading between an opening price of GH¢6.49 and a last transaction price of GH¢6.53.

The closing order book offered a potentially encouraging signal for MTN Ghana. Its closing bid of GH¢6.55 stood above the closing price, while the lowest offer was GH¢6.57. This suggests that buyers remained willing to acquire the shares at slightly higher levels after the close.

Declining stocks nevertheless outnumbered advancing equities, producing negative market breadth.

TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana recorded the largest nominal decline on the main market, falling by GH¢1.00, or 2.44%, to GH¢40.00. However, only 1,301 shares were traded, meaning the price movement occurred on relatively limited volume.

Kasapreko declined by 0.55% to GH¢1.81 despite leading the market by volume. Societe Generale Ghana eased by 0.21% to GH¢4.79.

Losses were more pronounced on the Ghana Alternative Market. Hords fell by 6.25% from GH¢0.80 to GH¢0.75, while Intravenous Infusions declined by 5.56% to GH¢0.51. Digicut Production and Advertising closed unchanged at GH¢0.40.

The contrast between volume and price direction is important. Kasapreko and Intravenous Infusions recorded substantial trading volumes but still ended lower, indicating that liquidity did not automatically translate into upward price pressure. In both cases, supply was sufficient to absorb investor demand without producing gains.

Several major companies closed unchanged. Ecobank Ghana remained at GH¢39.00, GCB Bank held at GH¢40.22 and Enterprise Group finished at GH¢8.50. Standard Chartered Bank Ghana recorded no trades and stayed at GH¢69.87.

The session reinforces the need to distinguish between turnover recovery and broad investor participation. A market can post respectable transaction values while remaining structurally dependent on a few liquid stocks. Tuesday’s activity demonstrated this challenge, with MTN Ghana alone generating more than one-third of turnover.

The immediate outlook is therefore cautiously mixed. Demand signals around MTN Ghana, GOIL, SIC and CalBank may provide support, but negative market breadth and reduced turnover point to continued investor selectivity.

Sustained market momentum will require activity to spread beyond the dominant counters. Without broader participation, daily performance will remain vulnerable to large trades or price changes in a small number of equities.

For the next session, investors will likely watch whether MTN Ghana can extend its recovery, whether GOIL’s rebound attracts additional demand and whether selling pressure persists in Kasapreko, TotalEnergies and the Ghana Alternative Market equities. The quality and breadth of turnover not simply its headline value will determine whether the market is building durable momentum or merely rotating liquidity among familiar names.
