Fuel Price Floors for Petrol and Diesel Dip Marginally for May Pricing Window

Fuel price floors for petrol and diesel have been slightly lowered for the first pricing window of May, indicating a modest relief in Ghana’s downstream petroleum market.

At the minimum threshold, petrol is expected to retail at GH¢13.25 per litre, marginally down from GH¢13.27 per litre recorded in the second pricing window of April, reflecting a 2-pesewa decrease.

Diesel prices are also set to decline more significantly, with the price floor pegged at GH¢14.30 per litre, compared to GH¢16.10 per litre in the previous window — representing a reduction of GH¢1.80.

However, the price floor for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has recorded a sharp increase, rising to GH¢13.02 per kilogram from GH¢10.79 per kilogram in the second pricing window of April, translating into an increment of GH¢2.23.

The downward adjustments in petrol and diesel prices follow a temporary government intervention aimed at cushioning consumers, with authorities absorbing approximately GH¢2.00 on diesel and 36 pesewas on petrol. The measure, introduced at the beginning of the second pricing window of April, is expected to remain in place for a one-month period.

The intervention was implemented to ease the burden of rising fuel costs driven largely by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has indicated that all Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) are required to comply with the established price floors in accordance with the Petroleum Products Pricing Guidelines for the period under review.

The regulator further noted that the stated price floors exclude premiums charged by International Oil Trading Companies, as well as the operating margins of Bulk Import, Distribution and Export Companies, in addition to marketers’ and dealers’ margins.

These elements, according to the Authority, remain variable and are determined independently by industry players within the framework of the pricing guidelines.
