GFA President wants new AWCON qualifying format cancelled
President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku has condemned the new format for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, following the Black Queens exit from this year’s qualifiers.
The format which serves as the ticket to the Women’s African Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup now has the qualifying round divided into zones which allows 12 teams to qualify for the main competition.
Okraku believes the new format does not protect the big names in women’s football on the continent.
“The Black Queens were super good against Nigeria in both games, unfortunately, the score line did not reflect,” Kurt Okraku said.
“But it is normal, especially when the new format of the competition does not protect the super powers of football on the West Africa Coast.”

“And that has been one of my clarion calls at the CAF level, I want the format changed because Africa must be represented by the best clubs and countries.
“And if it is the case that Ghana has to play against Cameroon, Nigeria or Ivory Coast, it is not fair and I have spoken at varied levels of football in the world and it is something that I am going to push for until Justice is done.”
The Black Queens lost the first leg of their qualifying match 2-0 in Nigeria, before returning to Ghana for the second leg which they won 1-0, losing on a 2-1 aggregate.
The results mean the Black Queens of Ghana will not participate in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations next year and the Women’s World Cup.
Also, Ghana who was eliminated by WAFU Zone B rivals Nigeria, will not play competitive football for the next 3 years.
