  • Ghana Begins Egg Exports to Burkina Faso but Surplus Persists — Agric Minister

Ghana has begun exporting eggs to Burkina Faso as the government seeks new markets for a sustained surplus that is putting poultry farmers under financial strain.

Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku said the exports followed negotiations with Burkinabè authorities after President John Mahama directed the agriculture and trade ministries to secure access to the neighbouring market.

Mr Opoku said Ghanaian officials encountered more than 20 trucks carrying eggs at the border during the negotiations. The trucks were subsequently cleared to enter Burkina Faso.

“Immediately after our negotiations, they allowed all of them to enter, and since then, Ghana has been exporting eggs to Burkina Faso,” he said.

The new trade route provides an outlet for Ghanaian producers and underlines the potential of regional markets to support domestic agriculture. However, the minister acknowledged that exports to Burkina Faso were not sufficient to absorb the existing surplus.

The government is consequently considering measures to stimulate domestic consumption, including adding eggs to meals provided under the Ghana School Feeding Programme.

The agriculture ministry is working with the Ministry of Education to implement the plan, which could create a predictable institutional market for farmers while improving the nutritional value of meals served to schoolchildren.

The strategy reflects a broader policy challenge. Rising production can support food security and reduce imports, but without dependable markets, storage and processing capacity, higher output can depress prices and leave farmers unable to recover their production costs.

Mr Opoku made the comments during an inspection of a poultry, meat and feed-processing facility under construction at Bechem in the Ahafo Region.

The factory will have separate processing lines for broilers and layers, with a combined capacity of 6,000 birds per hour. It will also contain three cold rooms, a hatchery and a feed mill.

The government plans to establish contractual arrangements with poultry farmers in the Ashanti, Upper East and neighbouring regions. Under the proposed system, farmers would receive birds from the hatchery and supply mature stock to the factory for processing and distribution.

Two trucks are also being procured to deliver the facility’s packaged and branded products to the market.

Mr Opoku said construction was approximately 50% complete and that outstanding payment certificates had been settled following earlier delays. The contractor expects the facility to become operational by the end of the first quarter of 2027.

The export of eggs to Burkina Faso offers immediate relief, but the continuing surplus indicates that Ghana’s poultry expansion will require more than increased production.

Sustained growth will depend on organised domestic purchasing, reliable regional market access, processing infrastructure and distribution systems capable of connecting farmers with consumers before temporary surpluses turn into financial losses.
