Ghana to Host Regional Launch of World Bank’s “Fit to Prosper” Health Strategy
The World Bank Group, in collaboration with the Government of Ghana and the Global Financing Facility, is set to convene a high-level regional launch of its new health strategy, Fit to Prosper: Investing in Health for Jobs and Development in Western & Central Africa, on Monday, May 4, 2026, in Accra.
The event, which will be presided over by John Dramani Mahama, comes at a time when countries across Western and Central Africa are facing mounting pressure on their health systems amid tightening financing conditions and rising demand driven by population growth, disease outbreaks, climate-related shocks, and an increasing dual burden of disease.
The strategy, developed under the World Bank’s Health, Nutrition and Population framework, aligns with key continental and global initiatives, including the Accra Reset, the Lusaka Agenda, and the World Bank Group’s commitment to advancing Universal Health Coverage.
It is also designed to support the Africa Initiative for Medical Access and Manufacturing (AIM2030), which seeks to boost local production of essential medical products, strengthen health security, and drive job creation across the region.
According to the organisers, the framework provides guidance for countries to reprioritise spending and implement strategic reforms within constrained fiscal space, while improving health outcomes and supporting broader economic development objectives.
The Accra launch is expected to serve as a platform to position the strategy as a unifying policy framework for the region, while demonstrating its potential to enhance productivity, expand domestic resource mobilisation, and improve resilience in health systems.
It will also facilitate discussions among policymakers and development partners on how to advance health sector priorities amid fiscal constraints, as well as promote coordinated financing and collaboration to support health and nutrition outcomes across Western and Central Africa.
