The Institute for Energy Policies and Research (INSTEPR), has bemoaned the absence of a substantive minister for the nation’s energy sector since the commencement of the second-term of President Akufo-Addo on January 7, 2021.
According INSTEPR, the nation’s energy sector is faced with many teething problems and the lack of direction and leadership at the moment can compound the problems and cause them to escalate.
“In the past week, Ghana missed a deadline to take over the operation and maintenance of the Ameri plant, there have been Union agitations at Tema Oil Refinery since the beginning of the year. In recent weeks, most part of the country has experienced low voltage and power outages, there are teething problems at GRIDCo and ECG which needs attention.”
“We have just mentioned a few of the problems occurring in the energy sector in the month of January and the Institute believes that the lack of leadership can compound these problems to escalate,” said INSTEPR in a press statement.
The Institute in its press statement, called for an amendment of section 13 (5) of the Transition Act, Act 845 (2012) to allow for the appointment and subsequent approval of a minister for the energy sector in the first 21 days of the formation of a new Parliament.
