Ghana’s population increased by 6.1 million to reach 30.8 million in 2020 – GSS
Ghana’s population according to provisional figures released by the Ghana Statistical Service on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 increased by 6.1 million from 2010 to 2020.
Announcing the provisional figures in Accra, Government Statistician Prof Samuel Kobina Annim stated the country’s population currently stands at 30.8 million per the recently conducted 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC).
According to Prof. Annim, preliminary figures from the Census reveals that 50.7 percent (15.6 million) of the entire population constitutes women with the remaining 49.3 percent (15.2 million) being men, adding that 6 out of the 16 regions in the country have a higher female population than men.
The two most populated regions, the preliminary figures indicate are the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions having a combined total population of five million, four hundred thousand (5,400,000) people.

The Ahafo region is the least populated region in Ghana with six hundred thousand (600,000) inhabitants.
The 2021 PHC is Ghana’s first digital census and the first census in an African country to be conducted successfully during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The provisional results highlight findings from the 2021 PHC Preliminary Report which focuses on population size and sex composition, population density, and structures by region.
The preliminary report is the first of several census data products to be released over the next two years.
