GIADEC prepares for bauxite mining in Nyinahin range
The Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC) has announced plans to mine bauxite in the Nyinahin range of the Ashanti Region.
This follows the successful completion of the Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) and a comprehensive social impact analysis by GIADEC.
GIADEC CEO, Michael Ansah, revealed that diligent work has led to the identification of substantial bauxite reserves, totaling approximately three hundred and seventy-five million tonnes across hills 4, 5, and 6 of the Nyinahin range.
The verification of the initial three hills (hills 1, 2, and 3) contributed a significant portion, amounting to half a million tonnes of bauxite, meeting stringent international standards.
This development comes three years after President Akufo-Addo’s announcement of a forthcoming bauxite mining venture at Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua district. President Akufo-Addo highlighted the potential for job creation and regional development resulting from the mining activities, emphasizing the equitable distribution of benefits for the local community.
Despite the anticipation of economic benefits, the announcement coincides with heightened public concern regarding mining activities in reserved areas. The rejection of a mining license request by High Street Ghana Limited to operate in the Kakum National Park has spurred a broader debate on environmental preservation.
Addressing environmental apprehensions, GIADEC’s CEO underscored the corporation’s commitment to responsible mining. With operations planned within the Tano Offin forest reserve, Michael Ansah assured the completion of comprehensive environmental and social impact analyses.
This commitment aligns with the corporation’s goal of conducting mining activities in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.
