The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) is calling on the Minister-designate for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, to intervene in the ongoing standoff between GIFF and shipping lines.
The ongoing standoff between freight forwarders, shipping lines and the Ghana Shippers Authourity (GSA) follows increments in charges by shipping lines, cargo release process that result in massive delays adding to cost, claims on container damage post return of containers among others.
In a letter addressed to the Minister-designate, President of GIFF, Eddy Ankrong, appealed to the Ministerto quickly intervene in the matter “that is slowly becoming a canker and if left alone for a little while longer will be a sure recipe for chaos in the sub-sector.”
According to him, several attempts by GIFF to resolve the issues with the shipping lines have all failed with the woes of traders and port users compounding and getting worse by the day.
“We believe the time has come to address this matter which is having a telling effect on us and the economy as a whole adding seriously to the high cost of doing business at our ports,” added Mr Akrong in the letter to the Minister-designate.
