Government to set up 24-Hour Authority as Committee Completes Framework Review
President John Mahama has announced that the government will soon set up the 24-Hour Authority, a critical milestone toward the full implementation of the 24-hour economy policy, including the registration of participating firms and the clarification of incentive packages to support them.
The President disclosed this on Thursday, January 8, during a visit to the Ghana Publishing Company, where he praised management for embracing innovative operational strategies, notably the introduction of a two-shift system ahead of the policy’s rollout.
President Mahama indicated that the committee assigned to review the 24-hour economy framework has completed its work and is expected to submit its report to Parliament, a move that will facilitate the establishment of the Authority.
“I’m pleased to note that the committee has concluded its work and it is expected to be laid before Parliament to enable the setting up of the 24-Hour Authority, which will then allow for implementation and the registration of all businesses participating in the 24-hour economy initiative,” he stated.
He explained that the Authority will also clearly outline the incentives available to businesses that opt into the programme, stressing that early participants, including the Ghana Publishing Company, are well positioned to gain substantially.
The President also welcomed efforts by the sector minister to engage the Ministers of Education and Finance to ensure that the Ghana Publishing Company secures a significant portion of government contracts for textbooks and learning materials.
“I’m glad to hear that the minister has engaged the Ministers of Education and Finance so that as we begin printing textbooks and learning materials, Ghana Publishing will receive a sizeable share of those contracts,” he said, noting that the additional revenue would support the company’s ongoing retooling efforts.
President Mahama urged management to formally sign on to the 24-hour economy initiative once the Authority is operational, expressing optimism that the policy will enhance productivity, reinforce state-owned enterprises, and contribute to broader economic transformation.
