Governor Asiama Pushes Industrial Transformation Agenda

  • Governor Asiama Pushes Industrial Transformation Agenda

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has called for bold leadership, stronger institutional coordination and accelerated industrial reforms to secure Ghana’s long-term economic transformation, warning that macroeconomic stability alone will not deliver sustainable prosperity.

Speaking at the 10th Ghana CEO Summit held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra on Thursday, Dr Asiama said Ghana was at a critical stage where recent economic recovery efforts must be translated into sustained industrial growth, stronger businesses and inclusive development.

Addressing business executives, policymakers and industry leaders on the theme, “Managing Financial Sector Reforms and Industrial Growth: Driving Ghana’s Economic Transformation from Vision to Action,” the Governor stressed that the country must shift from policy ambition to measurable economic outcomes.

“We must move beyond aspiration and translate our national vision into practical action and measurable outcomes that improve livelihoods, strengthen businesses, and restore confidence across the economy,” he stated.

Dr Asiama said low inflation, exchange rate stability and policy credibility remain central to rebuilding investor confidence and stimulating private-sector expansion.

“A stable macroeconomic environment gives businesses the confidence to invest, expand, and create jobs. Without confidence in price and exchange rate stability, long-term capital cannot thrive,” he noted.

His remarks come as Ghana intensifies efforts to consolidate recent macroeconomic gains after years of high inflation, currency depreciation, rising debt vulnerabilities and constrained access to external financing.

Recent monetary policy interventions by the central bank, according to Dr Asiama, have contributed to easing inflationary pressures, strengthening foreign reserves and restoring confidence within financial markets.

But the Governor cautioned that stabilisation should not be mistaken for transformation.

For him, Ghana’s next policy test is whether falling inflation, improved reserves and exchange rate stability can be converted into industrial expansion, productivity growth and employment creation.

That transition will require deeper reforms across the financial sector, stronger support for industry and better alignment between monetary policy, fiscal policy and the country’s industrial development agenda.

Dr Asiama said a credible and stable financial system must serve as a platform for long-term capital formation, enterprise growth and investment in productive sectors.

The challenge, however, remains significant. Many businesses continue to face high operating costs, limited access to affordable credit, energy price pressures and structural bottlenecks that weaken competitiveness.

For Ghana’s recovery to become durable, the private sector will need more than macroeconomic stability. It will require reliable infrastructure, patient capital, export-oriented production, stronger domestic value chains and a policy environment that rewards productivity.

Dr Asiama also warned that rising geopolitical tensions and continued uncertainty within the global economy remain major risks to Ghana’s recovery trajectory.

“The global environment remains highly uncertain, and this requires us to continue building resilience within the economy,” he said.

His warning reflects growing concerns that external shocks, including volatile commodity prices, tighter global financial conditions and supply chain disruptions, could still affect Ghana’s inflation path, exchange rate stability and growth prospects.

The Governor’s intervention adds to a broader message emerging from the 10th Ghana CEO Summit: Ghana’s recovery must now move from stabilisation to execution.

Business leaders at the summit have repeatedly stressed that the country’s economic progress will ultimately be judged by its ability to create jobs, expand industrial output, strengthen local firms and improve living standards.

For policymakers, the message is clear. Restoring macroeconomic stability is necessary, but not sufficient.

Ghana’s next phase must focus on transforming stability into industrial competitiveness, stronger private-sector investment and inclusive growth.

Dr Asiama’s position is therefore both a warning and a policy challenge: Ghana has made progress in restoring confidence, but the bigger task is to turn that confidence into factories, jobs, exports and long-term prosperity.
