Gov’t to Rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport
Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed that the government is considering a proposal to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport.
The move, if implemented, would mark a significant shift for one of Ghana’s most prominent national assets.
Mr. Ayariga made the disclosure during an interaction with journalists ahead of the commencement of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament.
According to him, the proposed renaming aligns with broader government efforts to ensure that public institutions and national symbols reflect Ghana’s democratic ideals and collective identity.
“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” the Majority Leader stated, adding that a bill would be laid before Parliament in accordance with constitutional and legislative processes.
He emphasised that the decision would follow due process and be anchored in the law, noting that public opinion would be an important consideration.
The proposal is expected to spark widespread public discussion, particularly given the historical context surrounding the airport’s existing name, with Parliament set to play a central role once the matter is formally presented for consideration.
