  • GPL: Kotoko and Hearts Set for Two Blockbuster Battles as Super Clash Takes Centre Stage in 2026/27 Season

The countdown has begun for Ghana’s biggest football spectacle after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the dates for the two Super Clash fixtures between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak in the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.

The Super Clash of the campaign will be played on Matchday 13, between December 4 and 7, 2026, with Asante Kotoko hosting their eternal rivals. The return fixture is scheduled for Matchday 30, between April 30 and May 3, 2027, when Hearts of Oak welcome the Porcupine Warriors in what could prove decisive in the race for the league title.

With both clubs expected to challenge for top honours once again, the two fixtures are already among the most eagerly anticipated matches on the Ghanaian football calendar.

A Rivalry Built on History and Success

Few fixtures on the African continent carry the prestige, passion and tradition of the Super Clash.

Since their first competitive meeting more than seven decades ago, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have produced one of Africa’s fiercest football rivalries. The two clubs have met over 200 times in all official competitions, with the rivalry dating back to 1954.

In league football alone, the contest has been remarkably balanced. Historical records show Kotoko hold a slender advantage, having won 39 league meetings, while Hearts have recorded 38 victories, with 39 matches ending in draws.

The statistics underline just how evenly matched Ghana’s two football giants have remained over the decades.

Last League Meeting Ended in Stalemate

The last Ghana Premier League meeting between the clubs ended in a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium on May 4, 2025.

Despite an electric atmosphere and chances at both ends, neither side managed to find the breakthrough as both settled for a point in another fiercely contested Super Clash.

However, Kotoko won the previous league encounter, defeating Hearts 1-0 in Kumasi in December 2024, highlighting how little has separated the clubs in recent seasons.

Head-to-Head Record Shows Marginal Kotoko Edge

The Super Clash has traditionally been one of the most difficult fixtures to predict.

Across league meetings, Kotoko maintain only a narrow advantage over Hearts, while recent encounters have also reflected the rivalry’s competitiveness.

Over the past several league seasons, draws have been a common outcome, with neither side able to establish prolonged dominance over the other.

Two Ghanaian Giants with Glittering Trophy Cabinets

The Super Clash also pits together the two most decorated clubs in Ghanaian football history.

Asante Kotoko have won:

25 Ghana Premier League titles

12 FA Cup titles

2 CAF Champions League titles (formerly African Cup of Champions Clubs)

Multiple domestic Super Cup honours.

Hearts of Oak boast:

21 Ghana Premier League titles

12 FA Cup titles

1 CAF Champions League title

1 CAF Confederation Cup

1 CAF Super Cup, making them the only Ghanaian club to complete that continental treble.

Combined, the two clubs have amassed 46 Ghana Premier League titles, underlining their dominance of domestic football.

Demanding Opening Fixtures Before Super Clash

Before their December showdown, both clubs face challenging starts to the new season.

Kotoko begin their campaign away to newly promoted Debibi United, before hosting Heart of Lions, travelling to FC Samartex 1996, and then facing Aduana FC and Karela United.

Hearts of Oak open their season at home against Berekum Chelsea before travelling to Bibiani Gold Stars. They will then host Bechem United before successive away matches against Karela United and Dreams FC.

Those early fixtures could significantly shape the title race before the two rivals finally lock horns.

Season Set for Nine Months of Fierce Competition

The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season will officially begin during the weekend of September 4–7, 2026, and conclude between May 28 and 31, 2027.

The campaign will feature 34 rounds of matches, with the GFA maintaining its no-midweek-fixtures policy to reduce travel demands and improve player welfare.

For football supporters across Ghana, however, attention will inevitably turn to the two dates circled on every calendar. Regardless of league positions or current form, the Super Clash remains the country’s biggest football event—one capable of defining seasons, creating heroes and adding another unforgettable chapter to one of African football’s greatest rivalries.
