GPL Week 30 Wrap: Asante Kotoko drop points as Medeama close in on title race
Berekum Chelsea edged Asante Kotoko 1-0 thanks to Kelvin Obeng’s goal in the 80th minute at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday.
The league leaders were expected to extend their lead at the top to strengthen their grip on the title but failed to do so despite Chelsea being reduced to 10 men with Owusu Osei sent off for a poor challenge in the 67th minute.
Chelsea scored the only goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining, negating the numerical disadvantage.
Obeng won a shoulder-to-shoulder duel and then curled the ball over goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim to give Chelsea the lead.
The Blues held on for their first win over Kotoko since 2020, as Medeama SC cut the gap at the top to just six points having played a game more.
Medeama came from behind to beat Great Olympics 2-1 after the Oly dade boys took the lead in the 19th minute through Maxwell Abbey Quaye.
It was the 10th goal of the season for the Black Stars striker in the ongoing season but the away side equalized before the half time break as Vincent Atingah scored his sixth goal of the season from the spot to see the Mauve and Yellow level up.
Stephen Kwaku was later stretched off the pitch due to an injury to the head in the 33rd minute.
Kwadwo Asamoah scored a goal of the season contender for Medeama in the 71st minute to seal the win for the Tarkwa-based side.
Aduana Stars are yet to find a win in nine games after a 0-0 draw with Accra Lions on Sunday.
Elmina Sharks fell 3-1 to AshantiGold at home, putting them one step closer to relegation. The Miners overcame their off-field issues, having been demoted to Division Two League due to match-fixing, to win convincingly in Elmina.
BibianiG Gold Stars recorded another home win as they beat Real Tamale United 2-0 to increase their chances of survival in the league.
Dreams and WAFA shared the spoils, meaning coach Ignatius Osei-Fosu is still without a win since taking charge of Dreams.
Karela United and King Faisal drew 1-1, Berekum Chelsea and Legon Cities played out a goalless.
The game between Accra Hearts of Oak and Techiman Eleven Wonders was postponed after a directive from the Ghana Health Service. The defending champions suffered a disease outbreak in their camp last week which has led to the hospitalization of several players.
Asante Kotoko continue to lead the table with 56 points, Medeama move up to second with 50 points, Bechem United are third on 49 points as Hearts of Oak complete the top four with 47 points.
Eleven Wonders, WAFA and Elmina Sharks are in the relegation zone with 32, 28 and 26 points respectively.
