GPRTU to hike transport fares by 19% from October 29
Public transport fares, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union [GPRTU] has announced, will be increased by 19 percentage points starting October 29, 2022
“We finally arrived at 19% and it takes effect from Saturday, October 29, 2022. We’ll sensitise people and our drivers ahead of the take off date,” said Abass Moro, spokesperson of the GPRTU on Wednesday.
GPRTU arrived at the decision after a crunch meeting with President Nana Akufo-Addo, together with other stakeholders in the transport sector.
The union had wanted to increase fares by 40%.
The union said the increment has been necessitated by the continuous soaring of prices of petroleum products at the various fuel pumps.
Currently, diesel and petrol are selling for over GHS 15.99 and GHS 13.10 respectively at major fuel pumps; a situation transport operators say it is eroding their profit.
