GRIDCo, VRA Engineers Restore All Six Turbines at Akosombo – President Mahama Says Following Fire Incident
President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed the full resumption of power generation at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant after recent outages caused by a fire incident at the Volta River Authority (VRA) switchyard control room.
Speaking at the 2026 May Day celebration held at Jackson Park in Koforidua on Friday, May 1, 2026, the President indicated that the facility has returned to full operation following successful technical interventions to address the damage.
“Just yesterday, I visited Akosombo in the Eastern Region to evaluate the extent of damage at the VRA generation facility after the fire outbreak in the switchyard control room,” he said.
President Mahama acknowledged public concerns over recent electricity supply interruptions, but praised engineers from the VRA and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for their prompt and coordinated response.
He explained that the engineers were able to work around the affected control system and successfully bring all six turbines at the generating station back online.
“I am aware of the concerns about the power outages linked to the Akosombo fire, but I am pleased to announce that engineers from GRIDCo and VRA have collaborated effectively to bypass the damaged control system and restore all six turbines at the station,” he stated.
According to the President, the plant was fully operational as of the previous night, restoring normal electricity generation levels.
He commended the engineers for their efforts, describing their work as a strong reflection of the capability and resilience of Ghanaian workers.
“These engineers demonstrate clearly that Ghanaian workers remain the backbone of the nation’s development,” he added.
