  • GSE Boss Abena Amoah Takes Up Global Capital Markets Leadership Role

The Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, Abena Amoah, has been appointed Chair of the International Capital Market Association’s Committee of Regional Representatives, in a move that strengthens Ghana’s visibility in global capital markets governance.

The appointment was announced at the 58th ICMA Annual General Meeting and Conference in London last week, according to a statement issued by the Ghana Stock Exchange on June 3, 2026.

The Committee of Regional Representatives serves as a key link between the ICMA Board and the association’s 15 regional committees and chapters. It also provides governance and strategic direction for ICMA’s network of more than 630 member institutions across 71 jurisdictions worldwide.

As Chair, Ms Amoah will lead efforts to deepen regional collaboration, strengthen representation and promote initiatives that reflect the needs of capital market practitioners across different jurisdictions.

Commenting on her appointment, Ms Amoah said she was honoured to lead the committee at a crucial moment for global capital markets.

“I am honoured to lead the Committee of Regional Representatives at such a pivotal time for global capital markets. This role demands that we keep global priorities grounded in regional realities,” she said.

She added that regional representation had become more important as capital markets grow more interconnected but remain shaped by local and regional realities.

“With capital markets more interconnected than ever, yet more diverse, our regional presence is not just valuable it is essential,” she said.

Ms Amoah said her priorities would include strengthening collaboration across ICMA’s network, advancing diversity and succession in leadership, and ensuring that regional voices influence ICMA’s strategic agenda.

The Ghana Stock Exchange said the appointment underscores ICMA’s recognition of Africa’s growing significance in the global financial system and reinforces the association’s commitment to ensuring regional perspectives shape its governance and policy priorities.

For Ghana, the appointment comes at a time when the domestic capital market is seeking to deepen liquidity, expand listings, attract diaspora and foreign investors, and strengthen the role of market-based financing in national development.

The GSE has in recent years expanded its market infrastructure beyond traditional equities to include the Ghana Fixed Income Market, Commercial Paper Market, Green and Sustainable Bond Market, and Over-the-Counter Market for public non-listed securities.

Ms Amoah’s elevation to the ICMA regional leadership structure is therefore expected to enhance Ghana’s engagement with global capital market institutions while providing a stronger platform for African market perspectives to be heard in international financial market discussions.
