- GSE Composite Index Slips as Equities Market Ends Week Lower
The Ghana Stock Exchange ended Friday’s trading session lower, with the main market index easing as investors closed the week with subdued trading activity.
The GSE Composite Index declined to 14,354.14 points on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 14,379.41 points in the previous session, representing a drop of 25.26 points.
The decline points to a softer close for the equities market after recent gains pushed the market to elevated levels.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index also ended lower, slipping from 7,873.87 points in the previous session to just above 7,853 points, reflecting weakness among listed financial counters.
The fall in both indices suggests that the market closed the week under mild selling pressure, particularly in financial stocks, even as the broader market remains strongly positive for the year.
According to the official list for Trading Session 7221, the market capitalisation of listed equities stood at about GH¢262.94 billion, underlining the strong valuation base of the market despite the day’s softer performance.
The report showed no trading activity on the Ghana Alternative Market, where Samba Foods Limited recorded no shares traded during the session.
The day’s movement suggests that investors remained cautious, with activity concentrated in selected counters while several listed equities remained unchanged.
The market’s recent performance has been supported by improved macroeconomic sentiment, lower Treasury bill yields and renewed investor appetite for listed equities as returns on short-term government securities continue to fall.
However, Friday’s decline shows that profit-taking and cautious portfolio repositioning remain part of the market’s trading pattern.
The equities market has benefited from the sharp fall in interest rates, as investors increasingly search for alternative returns outside fixed income securities.
Overall, the Ghana Stock Exchange remains on a strong year-to-date path, but Friday’s session showed a market taking a pause after sustained upward momentum.
