GSE Ends February With 46.7% YTD; Market Value Expands to GHS 235 Billion
A bullish run on the local bourse pushed the benchmark index past the 50 percent year-to-date (YTD) return mark, as equities sustained strong upward momentum during the week ended February 27, 2026.
According to available data, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) surged by 1,063.53 points to close at 12,869.20 points, lifting its YTD return to 46.74 percent from 34.61 percent recorded the previous week.
The GSE Financial Stock Index (GSE-FSI) also advanced by 1,131.81 points to settle at 7,692.88 points, translating into a YTD gain of 65.54 percent.
Market capitalisation expands
The broad-based rally across sectors drove total market capitalisation up by GH¢18.54 billion to close the week at GH¢235.74 billion.
Trading activity, however, moderated marginally. Total volume traded declined to 39.54 million shares from 59.44 million shares the previous week. Similarly, total value traded fell to GH¢218.93 million from GH¢338.26 million week-on-week.
Data sourced from the Ghana Stock Exchange showed that MTN Ghana dominated trading in value terms, recording GH¢173.29 million from 31.14 million shares. It was followed by CAL Bank, Societe Generale Ghana, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated and Fan Milk.
Gainers dominate
The week’s rally was underpinned by strong price appreciation in several counters.
ACCESS Bank led the gainers, climbing by GH¢10.15 to close at GH¢38.55, representing a YTD return of 137.96 percent. SCB Ghana advanced by GH¢9.68 to GH¢39.05, while GLD rose by GH¢7.87 to GH¢533.93.
Other notable gainers included BOPP, GCB Bank, Societe Generale Ghana, Guinness Ghana, Ecobank Ghana and SIC Insurance.
Market activity reflected aggressive buying interest in financial and consumer-oriented equities, reinforcing investor confidence in the earnings outlook of listed firms.
Sole decliner
CAL Bank was the only decliner for the week, shedding GH¢0.06 to close at GH¢0.88, though it still maintains a YTD return of 37.50 percent.
Outlook
With both the benchmark and financial indices posting double-digit weekly gains, the market’s strong YTD performance signals sustained investor appetite for equities amid improving macroeconomic conditions.
Analysts say the continuation of earnings-driven rallies and portfolio rebalancing could further support upside momentum in the near term, though profit-taking may intermittently temper gains.
