  • GSE Market Capitalisation Climbs to GH¢290.85 billion as Stocks Extend Rally

The Ghana Stock Exchange extended its positive run on Thursday, with market capitalisation climbing to GH¢290.85 billion as renewed buying interest in selected equities pushed the benchmark index further into record territory and brought the market closer to the GH¢300 billion milestone.

The GSE Composite Index rose by 147.81 points, lifting its year-to-date return to 74.07%, as gains in Tullow Oil, MTN Ghana, Ecobank Ghana, GCB Bank, Republic Bank, Hords and Intravenous Infusions supported the broader market’s positive close.

The performance reinforces the strength of the equity market’s 2026 rally, which has been driven by sustained investor appetite for selected large-cap stocks, improved market sentiment and stronger corporate earnings expectations in key counters.

However, the session was not uniformly positive. The GSE Financial Stocks Index eased by 14.74 points, reducing its year-to-date return to 77.04%, even as some banking stocks posted gains. The decline suggests that pressure on selected financial counters, particularly Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, weighed on the sector index.

Turnover improved significantly, with total volume traded rising to 1.92 million shares valued at GH¢9.48 million. This compares with 1.69 million shares valued at GH¢5.81 million in the previous session, representing a 13.68% increase in volume and a 63.30% rise in value traded.

MTN Ghana dominated activity, trading 824,406 shares valued at GH¢5.76 million. The stock accounted for 42.93% of total volume and 60.74% of total market value, confirming its continued position as the most liquid and influential counter on the exchange.

MTNGH closed at GH¢6.98, up GH¢0.18 from its previous closing price of GH¢6.80. The gain represents a 2.65% rise and pushed the stock to a new year-high of GH¢6.98. Given its market weight, the movement in MTNGH provided strong support to the GSE Composite Index.

Ecobank Ghana followed as the second-largest contributor to market value, with 31,108 shares traded for GH¢1.18 million. The stock closed marginally higher at GH¢38.05, up GH¢0.05, representing a 0.13% gain.

GCB Bank also contributed materially to turnover, with 14,463 shares valued at GH¢627,155.00. The bank’s share price advanced by GH¢0.43 to GH¢43.20, representing a 1.01% increase. Republic Bank gained GH¢0.12 to close at GH¢4.20, while Hords and Intravenous Infusions also posted strong percentage gains on the Ghana Alternative Market.

Tullow Oil was the session’s strongest performer by percentage gain, rising 9.98% after climbing GH¢1.19 to close at GH¢13.11. The stock traded 1,000 shares valued at GH¢13,110.00.

On the GAX, Intravenous Infusions rose 9.09% to close at GH¢0.60, while Hords also gained 9.09% to finish at GH¢0.24. Their contribution to market value was modest, but the gains added breadth to the day’s positive sentiment.

Despite the bullish tone, four counters ended the session lower. Atlantic Lithium was the worst performer, falling 8.14% after losing GH¢0.62 to close at GH¢7.00. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana declined 2.93% to GH¢38.83, while ETI fell 2.50% to GH¢1.95. Kasapreko also slipped 1.46% to GH¢2.03.

Kasapreko remained one of the most actively traded counters, with 244,342 shares valued at GH¢496,601.82. The stock accounted for 12.72% of total volume and 5.24% of total value traded, although its price decline weighed on the session’s overall market breadth.

CAL Bank recorded the second-highest volume of the session, with 612,526 shares valued at GH¢484,523.71. The stock closed unchanged at GH¢0.79, but its trading volume represented 31.89% of total market activity.

Together, MTNGH, Ecobank Ghana, GCB Bank, Kasapreko and CAL Bank accounted for GH¢8.55 million of total value traded, representing 90.19% of the day’s market turnover. This indicates that liquidity remained heavily concentrated in a few counters, even as the broader index advanced.

The NewGold ETF recorded 14 units traded, valued at GH¢6,473.46, and closed unchanged at GH¢462.39. On the GAX, total activity was led by Intravenous Infusions, which traded 20,000 shares worth GH¢12,000.00, while Hords traded 2,002 shares valued at GH¢480.48.

The session’s market capitalisation of GH¢290.85 billion leaves the exchange just GH¢9.15 billion short of the GH¢300 billion mark. That gap represents about 3.15% of current market value, suggesting that continued gains in heavily weighted counters could push the market past the milestone in the near term.

The approach towards GH¢300 billion is significant because it signals the growing nominal size of the Ghanaian equities market and the depth of the 2026 rally. But the concentration of turnover in a few stocks also shows that liquidity remains uneven across the exchange.

For investors, Thursday’s trading points to a market still supported by momentum, but with selective risk. Large-cap counters such as MTNGH continue to shape index direction, while price swings in recently active counters such as Kasapreko, Atlantic Lithium and TotalEnergies show that sentiment remains stock-specific.

The broader message from the session is clear: the equities market remains firmly positive, but leadership is concentrated. With the GSE-CI now up 74.07% year-to-date and market capitalisation approaching GH¢300 billion, investor appetite remains strong. The next test will be whether gains can broaden beyond a small group of high-value counters and sustain the market’s advance without excessive concentration risk.
