- GSE Trades GH¢5.14m As MTN Ghana Leads Market Activity on August 31
Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange closed August with 1.85 million shares changing hands for GH¢5.14 million, as activity concentrated heavily in MTN Ghana, Kasapreko PLC and CAL Bank during Monday’s session.
The GSE’s Official List for Trading Session 7286 showed total volume of 1,848,208 shares, with aggregate market value reaching GH¢5,136,436.65 on August 31, 2026. Ordinary shares accounted for 1,749,578 shares valued at GH¢5,040,955.46, reinforcing their dominance of activity.
MTN Ghana emerged as the largest contributor to market turnover by value, trading 252,914 shares worth GH¢1.76 million.
The telecommunications stock advanced by GH¢0.06, closing at GH¢6.97 from a previous closing price of GH¢6.91, equivalent to a gain of about 0.87%. The stock ended the session with a closing bid of GH¢6.99 and an offer of GH¢7.00.
MTN Ghana alone accounted for roughly 34.32% of the entire market’s traded value, demonstrating the extent to which liquidity remained concentrated in a relatively small number of counters.
Kasapreko PLC was another major source of activity. The drinks manufacturer recorded 424,149 shares valued at GH¢810,605.80, making it the second-largest traded stock by value during the session.
Its share price, however, declined by GH¢0.04 to GH¢1.94, from GH¢1.98 previously, representing a drop of approximately 2.02%.
CAL Bank produced the session’s highest ordinary-share trading volume.
A total of 826,527 CAL shares changed hands for GH¢587,833.82, accounting for nearly half of all ordinary-share volume.
The stock fell sharply from GH¢0.75 to GH¢0.70, a decline of 6.67%, making it one of the larger price losers of the session.
Ecobank Ghana also generated significant value despite recording no price movement.
The lender traded 14,027 shares worth GH¢547,333.54, closing unchanged at GH¢39.02.
GCB Bank added GH¢0.39 to close at GH¢39.55, representing an increase of approximately 1.00%. The stock recorded 7,168 shares worth GH¢283,709.80.
The banking counters therefore produced a mixed picture.
CAL suffered one of the day’s sharpest declines, GCB advanced, Ecobank Ghana remained unchanged and Republic Bank Ghana closed flat at GH¢4.20.
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also gained, rising GH¢0.03 to GH¢1.86, equivalent to approximately 1.64%, on volume of 59,297 shares valued at GH¢110,662.39.
Among the strongest gainers on the main market was SIC Insurance.
The insurer climbed from GH¢5.31 to GH¢5.47, adding GH¢0.16 or approximately 3.01%. A total of 33,898 SIC shares traded for GH¢185,582.14.
Enterprise Group also edged higher, rising GH¢0.02 to GH¢6.72, while Societe Generale Ghana slipped by GH¢0.02 to GH¢5.98.
Trust Bank Gambia declined by GH¢0.01 to GH¢1.20.
The pharmaceutical sector produced one of Monday’s steepest losses.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin PLC fell from GH¢1.98 to GH¢1.82, losing GH¢0.16 or approximately 8.08%.
The stock traded 42,216 shares worth GH¢76,790.70.
That decline, combined with losses in CAL and Kasapreko, offset gains across MTN Ghana, GCB, SIC and ETI.
A large number of listed equities nevertheless ended the session unchanged.
Benso Oil Palm Plantation held at GH¢76.67, Fan Milk at GH¢13.23, Guinness Ghana Breweries at GH¢10.70, GOIL at GH¢7.45, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana at GH¢41.50 and Unilever Ghana at GH¢40.00.
ZEN Petroleum Holdings also closed unchanged at GH¢10.89 after 2,554 shares valued at GH¢27,813.06 were traded.
Activity on the Ghana Alternative Market was considerably smaller but produced some of the strongest percentage price movements.
Intravenous Infusions PLC gained GH¢0.01 to GH¢0.76, equivalent to about 1.33%, after 53,219 shares worth GH¢40,446.44 changed hands.
Digicut Production & Advertising PLC advanced from GH¢0.26 to GH¢0.28, a gain of approximately 7.69%, on volume of 21,801 shares.
Hords PLC remained unchanged at GH¢0.88 after 23,549 shares traded for GH¢20,724.68.
Exchange-traded fund activity remained modest.
NewGold recorded just 61 units valued at GH¢28,205.79, with the price unchanged at GH¢462.39.
Monday’s session consequently reflected a market where trading activity was relatively concentrated despite participation across several counters.
MTN Ghana, Kasapreko, CAL Bank and Ecobank Ghana together accounted for a substantial majority of total value traded, while CAL alone dominated market volume.
That concentration remains an important feature of trading on the GSE.
Headline turnover can often be driven by transactions in only a handful of liquid stocks, meaning overall market activity does not necessarily translate into equally deep liquidity across the entire exchange.
The divergence in price performance also suggests investors remained selective.
Telecommunications, selected financial stocks and insurance names attracted buying interest, while CAL, Kasapreko and DASPHARMA came under selling pressure.
For investors, the August 31 session therefore offered two contrasting signals.
Trading volume remained meaningful, with nearly 1.85 million shares changing hands, but total value of GH¢5.14 million remained heavily dependent on a small group of stocks.
MTN Ghana was the clearest market leader, contributing more than one-third of total turnover and ending the month with another price gain.
As September trading begins, the key test will be whether liquidity broadens beyond the exchange’s most actively traded counters and whether gains in selected large-cap stocks can translate into more sustained market-wide momentum.
