GUTA express concerns over astronomical port tariff increments
The President of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA), Joseph Obeng, has voiced concerns over the recent announcement by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) regarding significant increases in Port Tariffs.
GUTA’s attention has been drawn to these astronomical hikes, which have taken their members by surprise, given the existing burden of taxes, levies, and economic challenges already burdening businesses.
The timing of this tariff hike has raised eyebrows, particularly as the port authorities themselves have been grappling with low traffic at the nation’s ports due to the high cost of doing business.
GUTA fears that this decision may further escalate shipping line charges, putting additional strain on traders and exacerbating the challenges faced by businesses.
In light of these concerns, GUTA has urgently called on the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to suspend the implementation of these new tariffs. Additionally, they appeal for constructive engagement with stakeholders to discuss the potential adverse impacts of these increases.
Such a move would help address the mounting cost of doing business and provide the much-needed relief to traders and businesses navigating the current economic landscape.
With the already existing tax burdens on the business community, GUTA emphasizes the need for prudent and transparent decision-making to ensure a sustainable and conducive environment for trade and commerce in Ghana. A collaborative approach, involving key stakeholders, will be essential in finding equitable solutions and mitigating the challenges posed by these tariff adjustments.
