- Haaland, Cherki Score Twice Each As Manchester City Overpower Palace 4-1
Manchester City produced a commanding away performance to defeat Crystal Palace 4-1 at Selhurst Park, with Rayan Cherki delivering one of his most influential displays for the club and Erling Haaland continuing his prolific scoring form with a brace.
City were already in control before half-time, but the contest was effectively decided during a devastating spell after the restart as Cherki scored twice in five minutes to extinguish hopes of a Palace comeback.
Haaland opened the scoring in the 16th minute, rising to meet a delivery from the left and steering his header beyond goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
The goal rewarded City’s early dominance and gave the visitors the platform to dictate the tempo of the match.
Pep Guardiola’s side continued to create opportunities during the opening period, with Phil Foden missing a promising chance and Haaland going close to adding a second.
Palace showed flashes of attacking intent but struggled to consistently penetrate a City defence that largely controlled the hosts’ attempts to build momentum.

Yeremy Pino’s free-kick struck the woodwork before rebounding into the net off City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and briefly giving the home side hope of turning the contest around.
But that hope lasted only a matter of minutes.
Cherki struck again in the 59th minute to restore City’s two-goal advantage.
His effort from the edge of the penalty area took a deflection on its way towards goal but was credited to the French international, completing his brace and putting City firmly back in control.
Instead of allowing Palace’s goal to change the momentum of the match, City immediately reasserted themselves and forced the hosts back onto the defensive.
From that point, Guardiola’s team managed the contest with increasing authority. Cherki’s performance became the defining feature of the afternoon. The midfielder was involved throughout City’s attacking phases, offering creativity between the lines and carrying a consistent threat whenever he received possession in advanced areas.
His two goals underlined his growing confidence and provided another indication that City have added a player capable of contributing both creativity and direct goal threat.
For a side that has traditionally relied on multiple attacking sources around Haaland, Cherki’s emergence provides Guardiola with another option capable of deciding matches.
Haaland, however, ensured the final word belonged partly to him. With five minutes remaining, the Norwegian striker scored his second of the game after being set up by Foden, finishing from close range to complete a convincing 4-1 victory.
The brace continued Haaland’s scoring momentum and once again demonstrated the difficulty opponents face when City combine sustained possession with direct service into the penalty area.
Even when he is relatively quiet during phases of play, Haaland remains capable of deciding games through positioning, movement and finishing.
Foden, who had missed an earlier opportunity, still influenced the final outcome by creating the chance for Haaland, while Cherki’s movement continually stretched Palace’s defensive shape.
The result gives City an important away victory and another indication of their attacking strength as the season develops.
Winning at Selhurst Park has frequently proved difficult for visiting teams, particularly when Palace are able to build momentum in front of their home support.
Although Palace managed to reduce the deficit shortly after Cherki’s first goal, their inability to contain City immediately afterwards ultimately ended any realistic prospect of a comeback.
For Palace, the defeat represents a second consecutive loss and leaves questions over their defensive resilience against elite opposition.
The hosts were competitive for significant parts of the first half and remained within touching distance at the interval, but the speed with which City punished them after the restart exposed the difference between the sides.
Conceding twice within five minutes of the second-half restart turned a manageable 1-0 deficit into a far more difficult situation.
Palace’s own goal gave them a brief opening, but Cherki’s second strike closed it almost immediately.
That period illustrated City’s ability to respond to setbacks without losing control of matches.
For Guardiola, the most encouraging aspect may have been the range of attacking contributions.
Haaland provided the ruthless finishing expected of City’s principal striker, Foden created the final goal, and Cherki supplied the individual brilliance that shifted the game decisively in the champions’ favour.
The Frenchman’s growing influence could become increasingly important over the course of the campaign.
City have long depended on technically gifted players capable of operating in tight spaces and creating opportunities against organised defences. Cherki’s ability to dribble, combine and score gives the team another dimension in those areas.
His display at Selhurst Park suggested he is becoming increasingly comfortable within City’s system.
For Palace, attention will turn quickly towards ending their losing run and rediscovering the defensive organisation required to compete consistently against the league’s strongest teams.
For Manchester City, the message from Selhurst Park was more positive.
A 4-1 victory away from home, two goals from Haaland and a standout brace from Cherki offered further evidence that Guardiola’s attack is beginning to develop additional sources of threat.
On this evidence, containing Haaland remains difficult enough. If Cherki continues producing performances of this quality alongside him, Manchester City may become considerably harder to stop.
