Hamilton Lights Up Monaco as Ferrari Sweep Practice One-Two

  • Hamilton Lights Up Monaco as Ferrari Sweep Practice One-Two

Lewis Hamilton produced a reminder of his enduring class on Friday as Ferrari swept to a one-two finish in second practice for the Monaco Grand Prix, raising hopes that the Scuderia may have found the rhythm needed to challenge for pole on Formula One’s most famous street circuit.

The seven-time world champion delivered a best lap of 1 minute 13.026 seconds, edging Ferrari teammate and hometown favourite Charles Leclerc by 0.111 seconds around the narrow, twisting and barrier-lined streets of Monte Carlo.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished third, just 0.168 seconds behind Hamilton, keeping the world champion firmly in contention but unable to prevent Ferrari from taking the psychological advantage at the end of Friday running.

For Hamilton, now in his debut season with Ferrari, the session carried deeper meaning than a routine practice classification. Monaco is a circuit where confidence, precision and timing matter almost as much as outright pace. On Friday, the Briton appeared to have all three.

Fresh from a strong runner-up finish at the Canadian Grand Prix, Hamilton looked sharp from the start, trading fastest laps with Leclerc as Ferrari grew increasingly comfortable with the track conditions.

His performance will fuel expectations of a possible return to the front row, and perhaps more. Hamilton is chasing what would be a record-extending 105th career pole position and 106th Formula One victory.

Monaco has been kind to him before. He won the race in 2008, 2016 and 2019, and this weekend he is also seeking to equal Ayrton Senna’s record of eight Monaco podium finishes.

But if Hamilton carried the history, Leclerc carried the emotion.

The Monegasque driver, racing in front of his home crowd, was again quick around the circuit where he has often shown natural speed. He briefly went fastest late in the session with a lap of 1:13.137, only for Hamilton to respond moments later with the lap that settled the day.

Ferrari’s pace will encourage the Italian team, but Monaco has a habit of punishing optimism. Practice dominance counts for little if it is not converted in qualifying, where traffic, tyre preparation and millimetre-perfect execution can decide everything.

Still, the signs were promising. On a circuit where overtaking is notoriously difficult, Saturday’s qualifying session could define the entire weekend. If Ferrari can repeat its Friday form, it may enter Sunday with a rare opportunity to control the race from the front.

Mercedes also showed useful pace, with George Russell placing fourth, while championship-leading teenager Kimi Antonelli ended the session fifth, about half a second slower than Hamilton.

Red Bull youngster Isack Hadjar recovered impressively from an earlier crash in opening practice to finish sixth, a strong response after a difficult start to the day.

McLaren had a mixed session. Oscar Piastri finished seventh, but teammate and reigning world champion Lando Norris endured a frustrating outing after a battery-related electrical failure left him stranded at the Nouvelle Chicane. He finished down in 19th, leaving McLaren with plenty to resolve before qualifying.

The two Audis of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto finished eighth and ninth respectively, while Haas rookie Oliver Bearman completed the top 10.

Aston Martin had a difficult afternoon, with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso languishing in 20th and teammate Lance Stroll down in 22nd.

Under clear blue skies and mild temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius, Verstappen initially set the early benchmark before Ferrari began to take control.

Hamilton first moved to the top on medium tyres with a lap of 1:13.729, nearly three-tenths clear of Verstappen. Leclerc then switched to soft tyres and briefly reclaimed the lead as grip improved.

But the final statement came from Hamilton.

As the session moved into its closing stages, Ferrari’s balance looked increasingly convincing, particularly through the slower sections where traction and driver commitment are vital. Leclerc’s lap appeared good enough to top the order, until Hamilton found the extra margin needed to turn Ferrari’s strong day into a headline performance.

The session ended with another dramatic moment when Mexican veteran Sergio Perez pulled over at Casino Square in his Cadillac entry, smoke pouring from the cockpit because of a front-right brake issue.

But by then, the day’s main story had already been written.

Ferrari had topped Monaco practice with both cars. Hamilton had beaten Leclerc on home asphalt. Verstappen was close, but not ahead. And as the paddock turned its attention to qualifying, the Scuderia suddenly looked less like an outside contender and more like a serious threat.

In Monaco, Friday does not win the race.

But it can reveal who has the confidence to attack the walls.

On this evidence, Hamilton and Ferrari have arrived in Monte Carlo ready to do exactly that.
