- From Bundesliga Dominance to World Cup Goals: Kane Stakes Ballon d’Or Claim
Harry Kane has emerged as the overwhelming favourite among Sky Sports readers to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or following an exceptional season for Bayern Munich and England.
The England captain secured about 70 per cent of votes in a Sky Sports poll assessing the leading candidates for football’s most prestigious individual award.
Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal placed a distant second with approximately 8 per cent, highlighting the strength of public support behind Kane’s candidacy.
The 33-year-old striker’s case rests on a combination of individual numbers, domestic success and his contribution to England’s run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Kane scored 36 goals in the 2025–26 Bundesliga season as Bayern Munich secured a domestic double, further strengthening his reputation as one of the most consistent goalscorers of his generation.
He also captained England to third place at the World Cup and became the country’s highest-scoring player in the history of the competition.
The achievements have placed Kane in a strong position to become the first English winner of the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen received the award in 2001.
Victory would also put the Bayern striker in an exclusive group of English recipients alongside Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen.
One participant in the Sky Sports poll argued that Kane’s statistical output had reached the standard previously associated with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“It HAS to be Harry Kane. His numbers are Messi and Ronaldo-esque,” the reader said, pointing to the domestic double and England’s World Cup performance.
The scale of Kane’s support does not determine the official award, which is decided separately by an international panel of journalists. It nevertheless demonstrates how his move to Bayern has strengthened rather than diminished his standing within European football.
Since leaving Tottenham Hotspur, Kane has added team trophies to the individual scoring records that defined much of his career in England.
That distinction is important in Ballon d’Or voting, where outstanding personal performances are often measured alongside success in domestic leagues, continental competitions and major international tournaments.
Kane’s main challengers are expected to include leading performers from Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and other major European clubs.
Yamal remains a powerful candidate because of his influence for Barcelona and his status as one of football’s most important emerging players. However, the margin in the Sky Sports poll indicates that supporters currently view Kane’s complete body of work as more compelling.
The debate will ultimately turn on how voters weigh Kane’s goals and leadership against the achievements of players who may have secured greater success in the Champions League.
For Kane, winning the award would mark a significant personal milestone. He spent much of his career being recognised as an elite goalscorer while facing persistent criticism over his limited collection of major team honours.
His performances in Germany and for England have changed that conversation. The question is no longer whether Kane belongs among Europe’s best players, but whether his 2025–26 season was strong enough to place him above every one of them.
If the Sky Sports readers’ poll is any indication, the England captain has already convinced a substantial part of the football public.
The poll gave Kane approximately 70 per cent of the vote, with Lamine Yamal second on about 8 per cent.
