Herbert Mensah Blasts Ghana Football Administrators Over Black Stars’ AFCON Failure
In a candid interview with sports journalist Elton Brobbey, former Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club Board Chairman Herbert Mensah expressed his frustration with Ghana’s football administrators, attributing the Black Stars’ recent poor performance to systemic failings within the sport’s management.
This comes on the heels of Ghana’s shocking failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, marking the first time in two decades that the team will miss the continental tournament.
Ghana’s exit from the competition was sealed after a dismal showing in Group F, where they finished at the bottom of the standings, failing to secure a single win in six matches. This performance has raised serious questions about the state of football in the country and the effectiveness of those in charge.
Mensah did not hold back in his critique, stating, “You would have noticed it even with Niger and Sudan. You’re not seeing stars in the top Bundesliga clubs or Premier League or La Liga, but what you have are teams playing with a system that makes sense, performing in a coordinated fashion.”
He emphasized the need for a well-structured approach to football management, highlighting the stark contrast between Ghana’s struggles and the successes of other nations.
His remarks point to a deeper issue within Ghanaian football, where administrators often evade accountability. “What is it about our administrators that they put a system together which, when they fail, they still have the guts to come and make excuses that nobody in their right mind would accept?” Mensah questioned, reflecting a widespread sentiment among fans and analysts alike.
