BoG to Inaugurate New $250 Million “The Bank Square” Head Office on November 20

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to inaugurate its new headquarters known as “The Bank Square,” in Accra on November 20, 2024, despite growing public criticism over the $250 million cost of the project.

The ceremony will be graced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the special guest.

The BoG’s decision to proceed with the new headquarters has sparked debate, particularly following the bank’s reported loss of 10.5 billion cedis ($900 million) for the year 2023.

Critics, including Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi Constituency, Yusif Suleman, have questioned the prudence of continuing such a costly project in light of the bank’s financial difficulties, arguing that the funds could have been better utilized to stabilize the bank’s finances.

In defense of the project, Stephen Opata, Special Advisor to the BoG Governor, insisted that abandoning the nearly completed headquarters would have been an inefficient and costly decision.

“I hear you clearly, but this project was way advanced. Stopping it mid-way would not have been the best decision under the circumstances,” Mr. Opata remarked in response to concerns raised by Hon. Yusif Suleman.

Mr. Opata further clarified that the financial losses the bank incurred in 2023 were due to several factors unrelated to the construction of the headquarters.

He argued that halting the project would have imposed additional financial strain on the BoG.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the new headquarters is a long-term investment that will enhance operational efficiency and meet the institution’s growing demands.

BoG officials have stated that it is expected to bolster the country’s financial infrastructure for years to come.

Despite the controversy, the bank remains firm in its belief that the headquarters is an essential step in securing the institution’s future.
