Manchester City Seize Momentum as Premier League Title Race Heads Toward Uncertain Finish

The match widely billed as the Premier League title decider may not have settled the destination of the trophy, but it has significantly altered the balance of power. Manchester City’s crucial victory has given them the edge in the race, leaving Arsenal chasing as the season enters its decisive final weeks.

With the run-in now fully underway, the equation is clear: every point carries immense significance. City’s growing momentum means they could move top of the table on goal difference with a win away at Burnley on Wednesday — a scenario that would further tighten their grip on the title race.

The Remaining Fixtures

Both teams still have demanding schedules to navigate:

Newcastle United (H)

Manchester City’s run-in:

Burnley (A)

Fulham (H)

Everton (A)

Brentford (H)

Bournemouth (A)

Aston Villa (H)

Arsenal must also balance their league campaign with an FA Cup semi-final, adding further pressure to an already demanding schedule.

When Could the Title Be Decided?

There remains a scenario in which the title race goes right down to the wire. If City win all six of their remaining league matches and Arsenal win their five, both teams would finish level on 85 points. In that case, the title would be decided on goal difference on the final day of the season.

At present, Arsenal hold a slim advantage in goal difference — by just one — even after City’s 2-1 victory. However, City’s upcoming trip to Burnley presents an immediate opportunity to swing that margin.

Any dropped points — whether a draw or defeat — from either side could bring the title-winning moment forward.

How Likely Is a Final-Day Decider?

While the mathematics keep that dramatic possibility alive, history and recent form suggest otherwise. City have only managed a six-game winning streak once in the past two seasons, between November and December last year. Expecting both sides to be flawless from here is a tall order.

Still, the margins are so fine that even minor slip-ups could prove decisive.

Arsenal face potential pitfalls, particularly at home to Newcastle United and away at a relegation-threatened West Ham. Meanwhile, City’s trip to an in-form Everton, a difficult visit to Bournemouth — who recently beat Arsenal — and a final-day clash with top-four contenders Aston Villa ensure their path is far from straightforward.

Lessons From History

The Premier League has delivered dramatic conclusions before. The most iconic remains Sergio Agüero’s stoppage-time winner against Queens Park Rangers in 2012, which snatched the title for City from Manchester United in unforgettable fashion.

Since the league’s inception in 1992-93, the title has been decided on the final day 10 times — and in each case, the team leading going into that day has held on to win.

City themselves were involved in one of the most recent examples, sealing the 2023-24 title with a 3-1 victory over West Ham United to finish on 91 points. In contrast, last season’s champions, Liverpool, wrapped up the title much earlier, clinching it on April 27 after a 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur with four games to spare.

Even more dominant was Liverpool’s 2019-20 campaign under Jürgen Klopp, when they secured the title with a record seven matches remaining in a season disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

When Is the Trophy Lifted?

The Premier League trophy is traditionally presented after the champions’ final home game of the season. However, if the title is decided on the last day, the presentation takes place immediately after that निर्णing match — whether home or away.

To prepare for all possibilities, identical trophies are positioned at both venues where the contenders are playing on the final day. This season, that would mean City at home to Aston Villa and Arsenal away to Crystal Palace.

Two identical podium setups, complete with pyrotechnics and 40 winners’ medals, are also readied in advance. The reigning champions — Liverpool — hold one of the trophies during the season but must return it at least three weeks before the final round of fixtures. The engraving of the winners’ names is completed only after the presentation.

A Title Race on a Knife Edge

For now, Manchester City hold the momentum and appear best placed to capitalize. But with both teams facing tricky fixtures and the pressure intensifying, the race remains delicately poised.

Whether it ends in a procession or a final-day showdown, one thing is certain — the Premier League title will be earned the hard way.
