Manchester United ‘on red alert for major protest from supporters ahead of Liverpool clash
Manchester United are on red alert for a potential protest from supporters ahead of next Sunday’s game at the Old Trafford to Liverpool.
Ahead of the corresponding fixture last season, United fans broke into Old Trafford, which led to the game being postponed and there are indications this will happen again going into Sunday’s clash.
Manchester United are frightened of a repeat of the shocking scenes, with some fans of the Red Devils having used social media to raise awareness of a planned protest.
Before the game in May last season, some fans broke onto the pitch, with others being arrested after clashing with police, while United players were prevented from leaving for the game after fans tried stopping them from leaving the Lowry Hotel.
The club’s administration is in talks with authorities including Greater Manchester Police to ensure that they have the necessary security in place.
Last season’s protest towards the end of last season was against the club’s owners, the Glazers after United were one of the teams that signed up to the European Super League.
There has been a lot of confidence surrounding Manchester United following the conclusion of a transfer window that saw Cristiano Ronaldo return to the club as well as the high-profile arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane but things are not happening as expected.
United have struggled for consistency, with the latest frustrating result for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side coming on Saturday, when they were beaten 4-2 by Leicester at the King Power Stadium.
Manchester United are in sixth place with 14 points in the Premier League having won four, drawn two and lost two of their eight games so far with Liverpool sitting second with 18 points and still remains the only unbeaten side so far in this season’s campaign.
