- Manchester United Rule Out Bruno Fernandes Sale Despite Galatasaray Interest
Manchester United have made clear that captain Bruno Fernandes is not for sale at any price during the final weeks of the summer transfer window, shutting down growing speculation over a possible move to Turkish champions Galatasaray and underlining the Portugal international’s continuing importance at Old Trafford.
Galatasaray have been exploring a move for the 31-year-old and were reported to be considering an offer of about €50 million, with the possibility of substantially improving his personal terms. No formal bid has been made, however, and United’s position is that any approach will be rejected, while Fernandes has given the club no indication that he wants to leave.
The stance is significant because Fernandes has entered the final year of his existing contract, although United retain an option to extend the agreement for another season. A £57 million release clause available to overseas clubs expired last month, giving United greater control over the player’s immediate future and removing a mechanism through which an interested foreign club could have bypassed negotiations over his valuation.
Galatasaray are not the only European club to have been associated with Fernandes, with Juventus and AC Milan also reported to have considered his situation. Yet United’s refusal to entertain a sale suggests the club has concluded that the sporting cost of losing its captain so close to the new season would outweigh whatever financial benefit could be generated from a transfer.
That represents an important shift from the uncertainty that surrounded Fernandes in previous transfer windows. He rejected a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia in 2025, saying he wanted to continue competing at the highest level, while Sky Sports reported earlier this year that he remained committed to achieving more at Manchester United and did not believe success elsewhere would carry the same meaning.
Fernandes’ value to United also extends beyond his captaincy. He produced 21 Premier League assists last season, according to reports, establishing himself as the team’s principal creative influence and reinforcing why removing him from the squad at this stage would create a football problem that could be difficult to solve before the window closes.
For United, the decision is therefore as much about squad construction as transfer valuation. Selling Fernandes would generate funds, but it would also require the club to replace a player who combines creativity, leadership, availability and responsibility in decisive moments, while simultaneously integrating that replacement into a side preparing for another demanding domestic and European campaign.
The timing makes that equation even more complicated because less than two weeks remain in the transfer window. Even a substantial offer could leave United with limited time to identify, negotiate for and integrate a comparable creative midfielder, increasing the possibility that short-term financial gain would weaken the team competitively.
Galatasaray’s interest nevertheless illustrates the attraction Fernandes continues to command across Europe. The Turkish side are reported to be prepared to offer him a lucrative four-year contract, but United’s position means any transfer would first require a significant change either in the club’s stance or in the player’s own intentions.
Fernandes has not indicated that he is seeking such a change. Earlier in his United career, he rejected interest from Saudi Arabia despite the possibility of dramatically higher earnings, while his comments since then have repeatedly emphasised his desire to compete for major honours and achieve success at Old Trafford.
The contract question will nevertheless remain important even if United successfully keep him beyond the current window. With the club controlling only an additional one-year option beyond his present term, discussions over a longer agreement could become increasingly significant if United want to avoid another summer in which his future becomes a major transfer storyline.
For Fernandes, the situation also carries strategic importance because he is approaching the later stages of his peak years and must balance loyalty to United against the opportunity to secure another major contract. For United, allowing uncertainty over one of their most important players to persist indefinitely could eventually weaken their negotiating position, even if they have enough contractual control to reject approaches today.
The immediate message from Old Trafford, however, is unequivocal. Galatasaray may see Fernandes as a potential statement signing, but Manchester United do not currently regard the transfer window as an opportunity to cash in on their captain.
With the release clause expired and Fernandes showing no desire to force an exit, United hold the stronger position. Unless that changes dramatically before the market closes, the Portuguese midfielder is set to remain at the centre of Manchester United’s plans rather than become the latest high-profile player to leave England for Turkey.
